"Most of the people buried at Smith Cemetery had been members of this church or they had family there. I know my G'pa Andrew Burns was an elder. This building was constructed sometimes after 1927 from the old material used in the Antioch Church.   When the present building was completed, this one was sold to a Black Baptist congregation who moved it to Joaquin." Almost all of these individuals pictured in the front row of this group are now interred at Smith Cemetery.

James Church of Christ
The modern new building features a beautiful baptistry scene painted by Beula Garner Webster and Yvonne Jones Peace. Beulah's daughter married Dave Jones, a grandson of Paralee Burns Jones and Sam Jones; Yvonne is the granddaughter of Mary Burns and John Wiley Jones. Paralee and Mary were sisters; Sam and John were brothers. Paralee and Mary had a sister named Martha who married William Wright Jones, who was a brother to Sam and John.

A  Brief History of the James Church of Christ
 by Yvonne Jones Peace

The James Church was  started around the turn of the century. Records of the charter members have been lost, but it is known that many of these members came from Arkansas. Families included in the early membership were Burns, Jones, Powell, Clark, Cox, and Manning. Originally the church was called McKee's Chapel. A Mr. McKee gave a plot of land in the Antioch community to build on. Timber for the building was cut from the John Wiley Jones' (and wife  Mary Burns Jones') land, and Charlie Manning who married Julie Powell (daughter of Frank Powell and Jane Burns Powell) cut the boards at his sawmill.Years later they decided to move the church building to another location in the James community because a new highway (Hwy 7) was being built. Charlie Manning traded a plot of land off his land for the original plot in the Antioch community. He sold the original plot to Walter and Rosie Reynolds. She still owns this land. In later years people began to call it James Church of Christ. I remember that when I was a little girl when they served communion, they used two snuff glasses  to serve the wine.  Most of the early church members are buried at Smith Cemetery. Most of their services were held by Eldon Hughes, minister of the James Church of Christ.  He died in1999, at the age of 93.  His mother was baptised at this church when he was 11 months old. This is the story as I remember it from my grandmother, Mary Burns Jones.

"This one is probably for some sort of congestion because of the camphor in it. At any rate, the laudanum would put you out of your misery, since it was liquid morphine, and "the yelar of two eggs" must have kept it from exploding. I tend to prefer Aunt Paralee's jellyroll recipe."

Grandma Jones' Jelly Roll

4  eggs separated, beat whites stiff
                                             1 1/4 cups flour
                                             1 1/4 cups sugar
                                             2 tsp baking powder
                                             1 tsp salt
                                             1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup warm (not hot) water
                                             1 1/2 cups homemade jelly

To beaten egg yolks, add sugar, water, flour, baking powder, salt, and flavoring. Fold in whites. Pour into large cookie sheet. Bake 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Turn onto damp kitchen towel. Spread jelly on. Take towel and gently roll up. Then place on foil with seam side down. Let cool, then wrap foil tightly sealed. (It is better when frozen and thawed up. Keeps well in freezer.)

Little Mama's recipes were "in her head." She used a pinch of this and a pinch of that. Uncle Marvin once got his wife to ask his mother how to make teacakes. When Aunt I. Z. made the batch of teacakes, Uncle Marvin told her that she must have left a pinch of something out; they didn't taste "like Mama's."

This recipe, which is well over 100 years old, was contributed by Jean Wagstaff.
