Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM A.1 BURNS was born Bet. 1813 - 1814 in SC, and died Aft. 1880 in Arkansas.  He married LURANEY.  She was born Abt. 1813 in GA, and died Aft. 1880 in Arkansas.

Notes for WILLIAM A. BURNS:
  William A. Burns Family
      Sue Burns Moore

The Burns family is of Scots-Irish origin, and  the surname comes from the Scottish word that means "a stream."  The farthest back that I have been able to trace our Burns family line is to William A. Burns, born about 1812-1813 in South Carolina. I have limited his descendants chart to five generations. Many have been so helpful in preparing this record, and for their help I am very grateful.

William was called "Billy".  In  the census of 1830/40 he was found in Carroll Co. GA. living in the 642th District. He was also found in the Oct. 22, 1850 census of Paulding Co. GA. in house # 725, at which time he was listed as William A. Burns 37-38 years old.   His occupation was blacksmith,  and his place of birth listed as SC.  Luraney, his wife, was born in GA and was literate.  She was about 37 years old in 1850.  Her maiden name is unknown.

In the 1860 census William was not listed with the family in Paulding Co. GA.  Instead, he was living with J. W. Blair and his wife Parmelia and children in Dallas, Paulding Co.  Although his age varied as being a couple years younger than he really was, I believe this to be our William since he was listed as a B. S. (blacksmith) from SC, and the only other Burns in the county.  What relationship he had to this family, if any, is unknown. It is my belief that the Blair family was taking in boarders since there are three men in addition to the family living in the household.  One was listed as a border, another as a MD, and William as a blacksmith.

By this time, son Henry H. was married and had his own home in the county, as did son Seaborn B.  Their mother and William's wife, Luraney (spelled Lurana in this census) was living in Seaborn's household and  listed as 40 years old. Son Samuel C. was 19 and was living there, too, as a farm laborer, and sister Sally (Mary) Ann, age 15.    Seaborn had $1200 in real estate and $400 personal estate, and was farming. They lived beside several Harris families, including the Elijah Harris family which was the family of Frances E. P. Harris who had married Henry H. Burns.

The whole family went to the Civil War - William and all his sons.   William and son Samuel C. Burns served the Confederacy in  Co. "C" of the 7th Reg Vols which was formed in Paulding Co. GA. Their company went by the name of "Paulding Guards", a part of Lee's Army of Northern VA.   Another son, Henry Haynes Burns,  was in Co. "A' of the 40th Reg Vol Inf, also from Paulding Co. GA, but his unit was connected to Stovall's Brigade, Army of the Tennessee. Son Seaborn B. Burns served from DeKalb Co. and died in the war in 1864.

From Henderson's Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of GA, CD ROM,
"Burns, William A. - private, May 31, 1861.  Wounded at first Manassas, VA on July 21, 1861.  Discharged, disability, at Richmond, VA, Aug. 23, 1861.  Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 4th Regt., 2nd Brigade , GA State Troops, Oct. 25, 1861.  Mustered out at Savannah, GA, Apr. 24, 1862."
"Burns, Samuel C. - private, Aug. 17, 1861.  Appointed 1st Corporal.  Surrendered at Appomatox, VA on April 9, 1865."

On July 21, 1861, the two great armies of the North and South faced each other in the field for the first time in the first Battle of Bull Run or Manassas. General Irvin McDowell commanded the Union troops while P.G.T. Beaureguard and Fighting Joe Johnston led the Confederate ranks. Most of Johnston's men who had been in the Shenandoah Valley (including William and Samuel) had arrived only that day by train , some coming directly from the Manassas Gap station to the battle.  McDowell's plan was to flank the Confederates .

This is the National Parks Service description of the battle:  "Confederate Colonel Nathan Evans, commanding the Stone Bridge, soon realized that the attack on his front was only a diversion.  Leaving a small force to hold the bridge, Evans rushed the reminder of his command to Matthews Hill in time to check McDowell's lead unit.  But Evan's force was too small to hold back the Federals for long.  Soon brigades under Brigadier General Barnard Bee and Colonel Francis Bartow (William and Samuel's brigade) marched to Evan's assistance.  But even with these reinforcements, the thin grey line collapsed, and Southerners fled in disorder toward Henry Hill.  About noon, the Federals stopped their advance to reorganize for a new attack.  The lull lasted for about an hour, giving Johnston and Beauregard enough time to stabilize their lines.  Attempting to rally his men, Bee pointed to General Thomas Jackson, and shouted the now famous words, 'There stands Jackson like a Stonewall!'
The battle raged until just after 4:00 PM, with each side trying to force the other off Henry Hill.  Then fresh Southern units crashed the Union's right flank on Chinn Ridge, forcing McDowell's tired and discouraged soldiers to withdraw."

The battle ended in a rout as the Yanks fled back to Washington.  President Jefferson Davis arrived on the field near the end of the battle, but the Confederates were too exhausted to pursue the enemy.  Lincoln replaced McDowell with McClelland as commander of the shattered Union troops.  Casualties of this first great battle were approximately 2,000 Federal and 1,000 Confederates, including William A. Burns who was wounded.  He was sent back to Richmond where he was discharged with a disability a month later.  Evidently he made his way back home to Georgia, because in October he joined  the Georgia State Troops for a period of about 6 months.  Samuel, on the other hand, made it all the way to the end of the war and the surrender at Appomatox.

William and Luraney  lived next door to  their daughter Mary Ann Burns Palmer in the Hempstead Co. AR census of 1880.  William was listed as being 68, a farmer,  and Luraney was 67, keeping house.  Both were literate. William said that  his father and mother were both born in SC, and Luraney's parents were from GA.  Sons Henry and Samuel lived nearby.   As far as has been determined, the family was not found in any 1870 census. However, according to great granddaughter, Mae Delois Sheppard of Hope in 1973, " I heard my father (Robert Lee Burns) say he was about ten years old when his father (Henry Haynes Burns) moved from Georgia to Ark., so that must have been about 1869, and they did not live anywhere but Hempstead Co."  A family on the move in 1869 might very well have missed the  1870 census.

In 1973, Paralee Burns Anderson, a great granddaughter, who lived in Hope, AR wrote that William and Luraney were buried in New Hope Cemetery .  This is not known for sure, although they are most likely to be buried somewhere in the area near Patmos and Hope.

Generation No. 2

2.  SEABORN B.2 BURNS (WILLIAM A.1) was born Abt. 1831 in GA, and died 1864.  He married SARAH FRANCES GOGGINS October 08, 1851 in Paulding Co. GA1, daughter of JOSIAH GOGGINS and ZILPAH WALDROP.  She was born Abt. 1836 in GA.

Notes for SEABORN B. BURNS:
!n 1850 Paulding , GA census, he was listed as a laborer,  but attended school also, age 19.

Child of SEABORN BURNS and SARAH GOGGINS is:
 i. BERRY3 BURNS, b. Paulding Co. GA.

3.  HENRY HAYNES2 BURNS (WILLIAM A.1) was born April 19, 1835 in Carroll Co. Georgia, and died November 01, 1904 in Shelby Co. TX.  He married FRANCES ELIZABETH PENELOPE HARRIS October 20, 1855 in Paulding Co. GA, daughter of ELIJAH HARRIS and ELIZABETH ?.  She was born May 24, 1838 in Union Co. SC, and died May 30, 1913 in Shelby Co. TX.

Notes for HENRY HAYNES BURNS:
Another record says Henry was born April 8.  According to the  1850 census of Paulding Co. GA,  he was born in 1837 in GA.

Henry served in the Civil War in Co. "A" of the 40th Reg. Vol Inf. from Paulding Co. GA.  His unit was a part of Stovall's Brigade, in which he enlisted as a private on May 7, 1862. This brigade was in numerous battles, including Vicksburg,  Missionary Ridge, Peachtree Creek, and the Battle of Atlanta.  Several of the many battles that his company was engaged in took place near his home  within Paulding Co. itself.  One was called the Battle of New Hope Church, a part of the Atlanta Campaign and a Confederate victory.   Henry was captured near Atlanta, GA, on July 22, 1864, in the Battle of Atlanta on the day that Hood attacked Sherman's headquarters .

He was not released from the Yankee prison in Camp Douglas, IL  until June 16, 1865, several weeks after the War was over. Camp Douglas was the Andersonville of the North. Several famous prisoners here were Sam Houston, Jr. and Henry Stanley, the explorer and writer, who asked the famous question, "Dr. Livingston, I presume?"  A former Union Army training post, Camp Douglas was on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, built on the former estate of Senator Stephen A. Douglas, of the Lincoln-Douglas debate fame. Originally built for 6, 000, more than 12,000 were crowded into the area.   Rife with all sorts of communicable diseases, prisoners died by the thousands as a result of the terrible conditions- 4,200 known dead, buried in a common mound, with estimates of at least a total of 6,000 actual dead- the largest death toll in Northern prisons in the war.  Cause of death was often malnutrition, small pox, or dysentery.  Once the Confederate prisoners plotted a daring escape which included capturing Chicago for the Confederacy, but the plan was foiled by Alan Pinkerton, the originator of the  detective agency.

Who knows what the family at home in Paulding County   was also  suffering?  The family's post office in the 1860 census was listed as Dallas.  From May 26 - June 1, 1864, General Sherman was in the county earning his reputation. On May 27, the Battle of Pickett's Mill gendered 2,000 total casulties.
On May 28, 1864, the Battle of Dallas occurred with estimated Union casulties of 2,400 and Confederate casulties of 3,000. Fighting ensued at two points with the final result of Sherman's flanking Johnston's troops and capturing the railhead at Altoona Pass, vital to moving his men and supplies . With every able-bodied man away, the women and children must have had to endure many hardships with the war literally at their door. Certainly they had to keep the farm going by planting and harvesting crops.  Then they had to protect themselves and their property from marauders.  Sherman's comment that "War is Hell" must have had special meaning to our family.

Henry's daughter, Mary Elizabeth used to tell the story that her mother Frances had told her about Henry's return from the war, and Mary in turn told it to her granddaughter, Yvonne Jones Peace. Yvonne said that Frances meet Henry down at the spring just below the house the day he came home .  She had a fire going with hot water for him to wash himself in.  Then she took his old clothes and burned them, and giving him fresh ones before she allowed him to come up  to the house.  Considering the condition of the returning POW , no doubt he was dirty, ragged, and probably vermin infested.

In the 1900 census of Hempstead Co. AR, Bodcaw township, Henry was listed as being 65 years old.  He gave  his place of birth as Georgia, and his father's as SC and his mother's as GA.   Frances was 61.  They had been married 45 years, and all 12 of the children she had given birth to were still living.  She said that she and both of her parents were from SC.  The only child living at home was Elisha who was 19 years old.  Sometimes after the turn of the century, they moved to Shelby County to live with or near their children who had already migrated there.

Henry is buried in Shelby Co. TX   near Campti Methodist Church on the old San Augustine Road. His epitaph reads:

Remember, friends, as you passby
That all mankind are born to die.
Then let your cares on Christ be cast
That you may dwell with him at last.

His wife, Frances Harris, is also buried here.  She died  about 10 years after her husband of burns received when her long skirt caught on fire as she was tending to a boiling washpot of clothes.

On April 18, 1973, Paralee Burns Anderson wrote concerning her grandfather Henry : " Henry Haynes Burns lived in Georgia, served four years in the Civil War.  He owned 40 acres of land near Atlanta. He and his father, mother, and brother Sam Burns came to Ark. from Ga. a few years after the war....My father (Robert Lee Burns) was borned Aug. 9, 1863.  He was two years old when the war ended.  His name was Robert Lee, named after his father's(Henry's) general."

In another letter dated Hope, Ark. May 25, 1973, Paralee Burns Anderson wrote:
"Grandpa Henry Haynes ' father and mother died in Hempstead County Ark. near Hope and are buried in New Hope Cem. They lived with Henry Haynes Burns.  I don't know the county he was borned in.  They all came here from Atlanta Ga. I don't know if Henry had any brothers left in Ga. or not.  One came to Ark., Sam Burns.  He had one sister.  I don't know if she died or moved away.  She married a Palmore."
"Francis had some sisters and one brother, Elisha Harris.  Francis was the only one of her family that ever married.  Before they left Ark. and went to Shelby Co. Texas, a lawyer wrote them that the family had died and he would get their estate for half, but they didn't do anything  about it.  Henry Haynes and Francis were buried in Shelby County Texas near Uncle Jim Cox.  Grandpa died several years before Grandma did."

According to Mae Sheppard of Hope, another granddaughter of Henry, after Henry's serving four years in the CSA in GA, the Burnses left their home near Atlanta where they were farmers to come to AR where they settled about ten miles south of Hope and raised their 12 children. The old homeplace is on Hwy. 29.  The overgrown Powell/Burns cemetery is on a dirt road east of Sheppard's store and has many unmarked graves.
Mae also said that she had thought daughter  Ardella " married an Indian" (She married Joel Deaton).  She believed that one of Henry's kids did, however.
According to Paralee Burns Anderson in 1973 of Hope, AR , "Those families who came to Hope were Sam, John, Amy, Mary, Victoria.  Paralee and Jane went to Shelby Co. Later Elisha moved to Shelby Co., but moved back to AR, and then to Dallas, TX.  Henry had a sister here(near Hope)."

Notes for FRANCES ELIZABETH PENELOPE HARRIS:
One record says she was born on May 26 and died on May 20.  She died of burns suffered from catching her long skirt on fire as she stood too near the fire  tending a boiling washpot of clothes in Shelby Co., and is buried at Sardis Cem. in Shelby Co.
According to Paralee Burns Anderson of Hope, AR, in 1973," Frances had some sisters and one brother, Elisha Harris.  The others never married.  Her family had died and a lawyer said that he would get their estate for 1/2, but they never did.  Supposedly the Harris family had a governor in it somewhere, according to family tradition.

He fought in Co C of the 7th GA Inf Reg alongside his father and  was the only one of the family who made it all the way to Appomatox.  According to his pension file in Hempstead Co. AR, he was wounded in his hip at some point during the war.
He served from May 1861 to April 9, 1865 where he" surrendered from service at Appomatox  and did not desert."   John F. Green, "a comrade of his old brigade"  and a citizen of Hempstead County gave an affadavit that he had known Samuel for 45 years.  J. W. Hudson of Nevada County  swore that he had known Samuel 50 years.  Sam signed the document with an "X."
Samuel's pension request in 1909 (#5189)  included the information from his doctor that he was suffering from skin cancer, old age and nearly blind. The request  was approved in August, but he died  the following March.
His widow "Mrs. M. S. Burns" was awarded the pension in  July of 1910.  W. Y. Foster signed as knowing that she was the widow of S. C. Burns. Her address was Patmos, AR.

According to Harry and Reba Powers, Sam left Arkansas because of cyclones.  This may well be, since I know from Andrew, Sam's son and my grandfather, that their home was destroyed by a tornado shortly before they left for Texas.  Papaw told me that he was a young boy, about 10-12 years old, home alone one afternoon, when a tornado struck .  As it approached, he took refuge under the bed in the main room of the house.  When the roaring ceased, and he looked out, all that was left of the house was the floor, a chimney, and the bed that he was hiding under.  He didn't want to leave his hiding place, but the chimney was very near the bed, and it looked unsteady.  Just as he climbed out, the chimney toppled onto the bed, crushing it.

Sam bought land in Shelby Co. TX on Feb. 20, 1895, part of the Sam Strickland grant. We still own a portion of this land which is located in the James Community.  It is just across the road from the Smith Cemetery where Sam and so many Burnes are buried.

I have a small notebook of expenses incurred as the family, along with Frank Powell's family, journed from Hempstead Co. to Texas.  My grandfather Lee Andrew Burns was a boy of about 12 , when the family made the trek.  He remembered vividly crossing the Red River near Plain  Dealing, LA, in the wagons.  I also have several "recipes" for curing diseases such as the flu, that belonged to Sam.  Supposedly, at one time there was a whole book of them that the family depended on in times of illness.

The following are the two I have that I found in the 1950's when Grandmother Burns let me look into Sam's old trunk ( that they had stored in a goatshed) and get what I wanted. I got a few land documents, poll tax receipts, and these recipes.  My little sister got a pair of spectacles. I will copy the recipes as they are written:

Recipe for the flux
alcohl 8 ounces
laudinim 2 ounces (my note- Laudanum is liquid morphine)
oil annis 1 ounce
oil cappurt (camphor?) 1
oil cloves 1
Syrup 1 pint
Mix all together.  Directions.  Dose adulte 1/2 teaspoon or enough to stope the paine or about a teaspoon ever 15 or 20 minut.

The next recipe does not have a title.
1 pint vinegar
4 tablespoon full parched salt
1 dime bottle ladnum
1 dime bottle turpentine
1 dime bottle prepared camphire
Let Set.  Set 48 hours abd add the yelar of 2 eggs.

Notes for MEDORA JOHNSON:
Granny Burns went by the name of "Dora".  She and all her sisters had six given names each as was fashionable in this era. She lived the last 30 years of her life living with one child and then another.  She had been stricken with what was  rheumatoid arthritis, or perhaps even polio, very suddenly, and virtually paralized in the matter of a few days.  She could move only three fingers and had only enough mobility to feed herself.  However, everyone said she was always kind, cheerful and patient and never complained.
She was especially pleased with a gift that my grandmother Daisy and my aunt Mamie made for her.  Because of her bed-ridden condition, the heavy quilt covers became painful to her in the winter, so Grandmother and Aunt Mamie took only the down from the breast of the many ducks that my grandfather Andrew killed and made Granny Burn a down comforter that was a real joy to her.

Notes for LEE ANDREW BURNS:
Papaw Burns was born near Hope, AR, but came as a small boy to Shelby Co. TX in 1896 with the rest of his family by wagon train.  One of the stories that he told me when I was taking a folklore course at SFA in the early sixties dealt with the night the panther walked through their house in Shelby County.

Their home was typical of many of  those in East Texas of the era, with a dogtrot dividing the center of the house.  Someone in the family was ill, and his father had gone to see about them.  At that time there were only two or three children in the family, and Papaw was the oldest boy.  About dusk, they could hear what sounded like a woman screaming down in the Flatfork bottoms. After dark, their bulldog who wasn't afraid of anything heretofore, suddenly tore underneath the house as if he terrified of something in the night.

As they looked out the window, they saw a black panther enter the yard.  He walked up the steps onto the porch.  As he began his walk through the dogtrot hall, the door , which was fastened loosely by a "latch" of a leather strip, began to swing open, possibly jarred loose by  the rhythmic walk of the big cat.  Everyone screamed, and Pawpa leaped to the door, holding it tight.  The panther took his leave, but they stayed up the rest of the night, wondering just where he was, although they could hear his calls as he made his way through the woods.

Pawpa loved the woods and was an avid duck hunter and fox hunter. I still have pillows today that are stuffed with the down of the many ducks he killed.  I even have one of his old decoys, riddled with shot where he or one of his buddies accidently shot it  . He always had good fox hunting dogs.  I remember the names of some during WWII as being Hitler, Mussolini, andTruman.  However, McArthur was his best dog until my mother backed over him accidently.  She said that she thought that was going to be the end of her being in the family!
Papaw was a very soft-spoken man with a very dry sense of humor.  My mother always said that he laughed the most when somebody found themselves in a tight.  I remember getting into sandburrs in his yard, and his laughing as I tried to hobble out.

Andrew wasmarried to Daisy Campbell, daughter of David Crockett Campbell and Celia O. Lynch, and they lived in the James Community, near the Flat Fork.  He farmed for a time, but left Shelby Co. for the oilfields of North LA before 1920. There they lived in the community of Goss (ten miles from Mansfield in DeSoto Parish) where they raised their family. Eventually they  retired to the old home place in Shelby Co.  He became an elder in the James Church of Christ.  He and Grandmother Burns are buried in the Smith Cem. across the road from their old place.

Notes for EDWARD COLUMBUS BURNS:
Uncle Eddie went to high school in Mansfield, LA, but the family lived in the community of Goss where he met Aunt Letty. He worked many years as a professor of entomology at LSU in Baton Rouge, having got his PhD from Iowa, but is now retired and living in Shreveport, LA.
Uncle Eddie tells this story about his father Andrew and his grandfather Sam.
Once Grandpa came over to visit and stay a week or so during the winter.  Daddy knew a lot about duck hunting and raised English ducks to use as live decoys.  He had a several wooden crates of these decoy ducks that he would load on to his Model T Ford and transport to Carmel or Smith Port Lake in Louisiana.  He would choose the loudest-mouth duck to be a "caller".  This duck would be staked out of sight of the rest of the ducks that Andrew had already planted near his blind.  The "caller" would grow lonely and call out to anything that flew over.  This would excite the others into doing the same, and many ducks were lured down toward the blind.  Daddy was having a banner year killing ducks, and Mama cooked duck almost every day.  Finally, one day she noticed that Grandpa was not eating the duck, and she asked, "Sam, what's wrong?" He answered in that special and typical stoic, laconic Burns way, "I have about had duck and duck enough...."  Since then, that has been the family way of saying that enough of anything is enough!

Uncle Eddie (E. C. Burns) says that Uncle Jonah was the "diagnostician" of his generation in the family, whereas Sam Burns had been the "family doctor" in the previous generation.
According to Uncle Eddie, routinely in the summer his Grandpa Sam felt it was his duty to give the kids a good "purging", a "spring cleaning", of sorts.  He used patent medicines or combinations of herbs or other things he put together himself .  Uncle Eddie remembers that  by the time Sam thought Eddie had enough "purging", it was about time for him to go home.
Sam's medicine chest consisted of such standbys as alcohol, camphor, castor oil, chill tonic,  turpentine (served with a little sugar), and poultices of various kinds. Some poultices were made from the leaves of a maderia vine or from red oak tree bark, heated and applied to bring an infection to a head or draw the poison out of a wound. Quinine was used a a preventative by the family, too.  In those days it was Uncle Eddie's job to pack empty capsules with the white powdered quinine which everyone had to take in the summer to ward off the dreaded malaria.
Uncle Jonah showed his ability to carry on the medicine man tradition when he diagnosed his brother Andrew in the 1950's as having malaria long before the doctors discovered it. The doctors were amazed to find the disease because it was uncommon by that time.  Jonah had recognized the reoccuring chill followed by fever  every othe day or so for what it was.

Notes for AARON DOLPHUS MATTHEWS:
I remember when we lived in Oil City that we would visit  Aunt Jennie and Uncle Aaron on Caddo Lake at their  fishing camp.  My favorite story about him revolves around my daddy and his younger brother Ray.
My daddy loved to fight when he was a kid, and he always beat poor Uncle Ray. Uncle Aaron ( their uncle) convinced Ray to go home with him and spend several weeks preparing to beat Corris, my dad, in a fight.  Uncle Aaron said that Ray just needed to eat lots and lots of beans, which Ray did faithfully everyday until he was sick of beans.
The day arrived when Uncle Ray came home.  Uncle Aaron drove him into the yard, and there was Corris.  Ray got out, didn't say a word, and proceeded to punch Corris in the mouth.  Corris then beat him up, as usual.  Uncle Aaron told Ray to get back in the car because he needed to eat more beans and then come back to whip Corris.  Ray had it figured out by then, and just turned and went into the house.
Uncle Aaron was in WWI - TX Corporal Co. E, 312 Ammunition TN
