His initial interest was in international relations but exposure to the policy sciences at James Madison College led him to study urban community policy problems, a field of concentration now called political economics. Leaving MSU in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science with high honors he returned to New Mexico to join the State Tourism and Travel Division and as head of the Research Bureau he set up a system to track the Economic Impact of Tourism on New Mexico's Economy. He was an active board member of the Tourism and Travel Research Association (national) and a board member of the National Council of State Travel Directors when he served in that position with the NM Economic Development and Tourism Department. Later, serving as Director of Marketing for the NM Economic Development and Tourism Department he was in charge of administering the Community Matching Grants Program, printing and advertising contracts.

In 1987, at a change in gubernatorial administrations, Adams left state government to do marketing and promotion consulting work for companies in the travel industry and later that year joined Nobel/Sysco Food Services as a Marketing Associate. In 1996 Adams joined Quinn Southwest, the Santa Fe Division of SWS Securities, and is now a Financial Advisor specializing in retirement and estate planning and small organization and institutional investing.

He is a member of the Financial Planning Association. He also attends meetings of the Estate Planning Council of Santa Fe. Adams is a member of the Tourism Association of New Mexico, the Santa Fe and New Mexico Lodgers Associations, the Las Vegas/San Miguel County Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Fe County Chamber of Commerce.

Adams is a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he has served in many leaderships positions.

An active Freemason, Adams is a Past Master of Montezuma Lodge #1, AF&AM (1987), a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Second Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of New Mexico, AF&AM, and continues to serve as a member of the Education and Public Schools Committee of the Lodge helping to select students to receive the scholarships awarded annually by Montezuma Lodge.

Having served as presiding officer of three of the four bodies of Scottish Rite Masonry for the Valley of Santa Fe, Adams is a past Treasurer for the Santa Fe bodies and is a 33rd degree, Inspector General Honorary of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction. In January 2001 he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the New Mexico Scottish Rite Foundation and is coordinating work on two pilot projects to establish dyslexia and reading programs in New Mexico schools from the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
