CEMENT
The earliest known use of cement-like materials was in Egyptian times when, by mixing an impure form of gypsum with water, the resulting paste was used as a bonding agent between the stone blocks of the pyramids.
The Romans were the first to use limestone, however, which they crushed and burned before mixing with water and used as mortar between bricks and stones.
Although cement continued to evolve through the centuries, it was John Smeaton who in 1756 first produced cement by baking limestone containing a proportion of clay, and Joseph Aspdin who in 1824 was the first to patent Portland cement.
