About Me
I am Jane Prater from Charlotte, North Carolina.  I worked as a teacher and a director of testing in local high schools for 28 years.  Im now retired and teach knitting.  My husband is an engineer and my dog Henry is a professional pet and my dog Jake is a lapdog.  I have two fantastic daughters, two very wonderful sons in law, and two beyond description grandsons.

Ive been knitting since 1960s, but obsessively since 1994.

Sometimes I knit all day long; sometimes not much(hands hurt).  Takes pain or the visit of grandsons to stop me.  I would probably average 5 hours a day since retirement.

Ive knitted 100s of Finished Objects.  Although finishing an object is not always important to me.  Im a process person.

I have 2 real UFOs right now.  I also have dozens of swatches and what if I kinds of things surrounding my favorite chair.

I design on the needles.  It isnt an efficient way to do things and often large chunks must be frogged.  Occasionally, the whole this just doesnt work and I frog and restart the yarn.  Frogging doesnt ever bother me because it means I just learned something new or solved some problem.  Always a plus.

My first top down sweater after reading BWs book is really my favorite.  It is made of Katrina, a very forgiving yarn and has vertical darts to make it fit my body instead of swamp it.

My greatest challenge in knitting for myself is keeping the shoulders small enough while covering the boobs.  Top down is the only way I find that works for me.  No matter how much math I do, the shoulders droop over my arms in top up sweaterseven my own design.

The most important things I've learned about knitting for
myself are:

1.) Taking out fabric is mandatory.  No drooping sleeves, midriffs.  Extra fabric just makes me look and FEEL bigger.
2.) No design will make me look small, so concentrate on making what will make me feel good.
3.) Smaller yarnnever above worsted.
