L Shaped Scarf
Merely a Suggestion
Knitting Patterns by
Jane Prater

Materials:
Two skeins of Shine or @ 250 yds of sport wt. yarn
Optional:  Complimentary yarns from your stash
in small amounts
Size 9 or 10 needles (Any size that gets gauge!!)

Gauge:   (Yes!  It is important!)  3.5 sts/inch  Scarf must be
very drapey to hang well.

This scarf is knitted using patchwork knitting techniques.  Originally I attempted to make this scarf in stockinette stitch, but it was just too boring to knit.  I love the work of Horst Schultz and was inspired to shape this scarf using techniques I learned from his books.

Row 1:  CO 32, pm, CO 64, pm, CO 96.  (RS)   I use the crochet cast on, but it is your choice.
Row 2:  Knit all sts, slipping markers.
Row 3:  *K to 2 sts before marker, SSK, slip marker, K2tog;
repeat from *; K to end.  (decrease row)
Row 4:  Purl all, slipping markers
Row 5:  Repeat row 3
Row 6:  Knit all sts, slipping markers.

Repeat rows 3-6 until all sts between the markers have been absorbed into the pattern.

Bind off very loosely.

Fold over 2 inches  of longest side and create a slot using a hem stitch.  Tuck shortest end into the slot and arrange on your shoulders.

Adding complimentary stripes.

Simply tie on a new yarn and complete rows 5 and 6.  Don?t worry about even spacing; it looks better done a bit irregularly.

Now for your design . . . .

Pick your yarn.  Bulky yarns don'?t workvery well--  too chunky. Try sport or dk weight.  Use as many different ones as you wish.

Make a swatch?even if you don?t want to do it.  Make it 4 inches square at least.  Look at the interplay of the yarns.  Feel how it drapes.  If you like it, then measure it for your gauge.

Gauge = ______ stitches per inch.

Multiply your stitches per inch gauge times 9.  That is your first cast on number.
Multiply your stitches per inch gauge times 18.  That is your second cast on number.

Multiply your stitches per inch gauge times 27.  That is your final cast on number.

Knit a row, then begin your repeats of rows 3-6.

You have designed your own scarf!!!!!?

SSK = a left leaning decrease

Slip one st kwise to the right needle;
Slip another st knwise to the right needle;
Insert the left needle straight into the front of these two slipped stitches.
Knit the two sts through the back loop.
