Purpose for site and fictional background: "Jeff Poitras worked as a professional carpenter for 40 years. Upon retirement, boredom started to set in. Jeff decided to apply his trade knowledge to creating a small business making and selling furniture as well as teaching wood-working classes to locals." The website features the products that my uncle has created, a page that features some Youtube "how-to" videos, and a page to view his class schedule and sign up.
Defense of the Final Product:
I wanted to make the site simple so that it may be approachable to all levels of internet user. My design was, in my opinion, very basic in that each page has the company name at the top, and a main center section with that pages' content. Each page has the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. The color choices were to reflect a "nature" or "woodsy" feel, reflecting the nature of the business. I used a palette selector website to choose the appropriate shades of brown and green. I chose white for the text color in the center section because I used a transparent background and thought that white would be the easiest for the user to read. I chose to use the transparent background so show more of the background site background image of a forest. The home page central content displays image links to each category of product, I thought this would be a way to look simple and uncluttered. The images I found were of all different sizes. I used Paint.net to resize the images to meet my needs.
Opportunities for Improvement and Growth:
I don't know if I will have a use for this specific website in the future. This was my very first attempt at creating a webpage using actual code. I feel as though there is a lot more that I can learn to further enhance the look of the page. I may use this as a template for some other business. I am planning to redesign the website for the company I currently work for as a kind of "resume" for attaining a new position after my contract is completed. Some of the elements that I have used here may be useful on that project. Some things that I would like to use for improvement would be implementing reactive functions, particularly for window resizing and mobile viewing.
