What to teach?

2. Functional skills

Functional skills include
a) domestic skills (eg dressing, sorting clothes, cooking simple meals),
b) activities around the community (eg crossing the streets),
c) leisure activities (eg swimming),
d) vocational skills (eg cleaning windows, following a daily schedule, taking messages).

I believe that the following skills deserve top priorities when deciding on a curriculum for any person with ASD

1.  Communication skills

Many of the supposedly inexplicable destructive/disruptive behaviours that are observed in persons with ASD occur due to their inability to express themselves in more appropriate ways.
Communication may be verbal or non-verbal eg using PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).

PECS involves the use of and the exhange of pictures/symbols. It helps the user to spontaneously initiate communicative interaction, and understand the function of communication. Teachers and parents will find it easy to use.
