Joe Koch's Allis Chalmers History

My name is Joe Koch and I am from Little Falls, NY which is about midstate. I am 22 years old and have lived on our dairy farm my entire life.

My grandfather purchased the farm in 1954 when he my grandmother and three kids, one of which is my dad, moved up from New York City just a few years after they came over from France. I am only old enough to remember two of the Allis Chalmers we once had so I will tell you our history as it was told to me.

The first AC we purchased was a used CA which ran a self powered baler I am not sure of its make but I have a picture. My uncle always tells me how he has poor hearing in his right ear which was always turned toward the baler's engine. As things got better we bought a WD brand new from our local AC dealer,Urgos Farm Suppy. Shortly after we traded the CA for a new WD 45.

The year my dad graduated High School in 1967 the 190s came out so we purchased one of them. My dad took the WD 45 to shop class and put the factory big bore kit in it which gave it five more horse power. A few months later the WD was tradedfor a 180. Ayear later a front end loader was mounted on it. The 190XT's came out and a neighboring farm bought one.It had the 23 inch rubber on it and my dad said it was beautiful. Even though our 190 had few hours on it we had to have one so Urgos came by and we made a good deal. Around the same time we found a nice used D-19 at Urgos so the WD 45 was traded for that. My dad said he never really cared to much for the D-19, he just didn't like that style. In 1973 or 1974 I can't remember which the 190XT's PTO went for some freak factory defect reason. It was under warranty so it went into the shop to be torn apart which my dad an grandfather were not to fond of. So they figured they wanted to trade it even though it had less than 1000 hrs. We told Urgos to bring up a new 200 but instead he brought the new style which had just come out 7030 without a cab. We tried it and bought it the next day. What a power house. The following year we put a Year Around cab on it which had heat but no air.

A couple years later the D-19 was traded for a new 185 and in 1978 the 180 was traded for another new 185 with a loader. I only faintly remember the 7030 and one of the 185s.

My grandfather is part German and he always knew of Deutz tractors so we started a dealership in 1979 along with the farm. We sold one of the 185s in 1980 to our neighbor an bought a Deutz DX 110 from ourslves. In 1983 we traded the 7030 to ourslves for a Deutz DX 160 FWD. Two weeks later a farmer who bought a Deutz DX 120 FWD from us bought the 7030. We then bought a Deutz DX120 FWD for ourslves from us. Then we traded the DX110 for another DX 120.

In 1985 when Deutz bought out Allis we thought best to get out of that buisness and stick with the farm which was a smart move because all the Allis dealers became Deutz Allis dealers and many went out of business including Urgos the dealer we delt with for decades.

In 1987 we traded our last Allis a 185 for a Deutz Allis 7085 with a loader. This past July my dad retired and sold the cows we still have the farm and all the eqipment which include 5 Deutz tractors. We also over the years had various AC impliments such as plows a forage havester a 4 row corn planter which we still have today an a set off 1600 ten shank AC chisel plows which I used this sping.

Thats our AC history I hope you read an enjoy it.
