The New England
Quarterly Journal of
Pirate Studies

Welcome to the New England Quarterly Journal of Pirate Studies, a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the advancement of the field of Piratology. This website (like the field itself) is in a continual state of construction and re-construction-- so bear with us. Content will be added in the weeks and months to come.

NEWS! 11.03.01

The NEQJPS is proud to share with its readers the following, obtained from Dr. Robert J. Reardon-Schwartzman. As many of you are no doubt aware, Prof. Reardon-Schwartzman holds the prestigious Edward Teach Endowed Chair for Buccaneer Studies at the Tulsa State College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, one of the first schools to develop a program in Piratology and related subfields.

Knowing that many of our colleagues would be happy to learn from this great pioneer in our field, we asked Prof. Reardon-Schwartzman if he could share some of his course materials with the NEQJPS. He graciously consented, and so we are pleased to present here an assignment from his graduate course in Piratical Philosophy. Enjoy!

Paper topics for PiPhi 501-J:

1. Mediterranean and Carribbean pirates adopted significantly different approaches from one another to the hiding of buried treasure in the 19th Century. Compare and contrast the approaches, making reference to Bluebeard's use of gold-encrusted chests and Captain Kidd's use of invisible ink and numerical codes in his treasure maps.

2. Volkner-Swallows and Miflin-Epstein have made contradictory arguments on both the origins and significance of the use of parrots as intersubjectively constructed symbols. In your own opinion, what are the relative merits of their arguments?

3. In "The True Origins of American Democracy: The Federalists Walk the Plank," Wallenheckel and Sanchez-Schimmelplatz argue that Bly's "Rules of the Plank" significantly contributed to Madison's design of the American Consitution, and even go so far as to maintain that Bly's choice of wood for his planks influenced the choice of parchment for the Constitution. Do they overstate their case? Make reference to Bly's "Rules" whenever possible.

Papers should be no longer than 3 fathoms. Good luck, and shiver me timbers.
