Instructions on final assignment Write a brief memo (5-7 pp.) describing and evaluating one fictional depiction of terrorism or counter-terrorism. The assignment is due Friday, January 30. If you do not bring the assignment with you to class that morning, bring it to building E-53, room 354 before 5 PM. This assignment is worth 40 % of your final grade. Choose either a fictional terrorist attack or a fictional counter-terrorist operation to describe and evaluate. You are of course free to use one of the events depicted in the G.I. Joe comic book, but you are also free to select a fictional event from any mainstream medium. You have been provided with two other handouts to help you with this assignment--one on terrorist attacks and one on counter-terrorist operations. Please use the handout appropriate to your chosen event as a guide to completing this assignment. Remember, you are writing a memo, not an essay. Feel free to use the outline format suggested by the handouts. Remember also that a large part of your job in this paper is evaluation. Since the event is fictional, one of the most important ways you can evaluate it is to compare it to events in the real world. (For example, do the terrorists use weapons that are within the reach of real-life terrorist organizations? Do the counter-terrorist operatives abide by the laws that restrict their real-life counterparts? Is there anything real-life terrorists or counter-terrorists can learn from this fictional event?) If you have any questions on this assignment, send us an email or come see us during office hours--the sooner, the better. Late papers will be penalized ten percent per day. No papers will be accepted after Tuesday, February 3. |
