Using Extenders and Special Protocols

Extenders and Special Protocols are essentially mini-programs that add additional functionality to your remote.  They are all remote specific, meaning they may be available and work for some remotes but not for others.

You add a new special protocol in IR the same way you you add a new regular protocol in IR.  The only difference is that a new regular protocol sends out a new IR signal that your device recognizes.  Instead of sending out an IR signal, a special protocol captures a key press and does something else.  Special protocols provide a lot of new functionality including.  Below is a list of some of the more popular special protocols:

·        Device Specific Macros – This special protocol allows you to create a macro and assign it to a specific button, but it will only be executed when in the device mode you specify, instead of all device modes.

·        ToadTog – This special protocol allows you to simulate discrete codes by having the remote internally keep track of the state of your devices and execute different macros based on their state.

·        Volume Punch Through Changer – Allows you to dynamically change the device controlled via VPT

·        Device Multiplexer – Allows you to assign two or more Setup Codes to the same device button.

Extenders are mini-programs that essentially take control of your remote control and add new functionality.  They often come packaged with the most popular special protocols included.  Like Special Protocols, Extenders are remote specific.  Below is a list of functionality that is often provided by an Extender:

·        Ability to put a Macro or KeyMove on any key.

·        Additional room for more KeyMoves and Macros.

·        Macros can be nested and executed faster than on an unextended remote.

·        Configurable backlight timers.

·        Configurable shift keys.

·        For LCD remotes, control of the device name displayed on the LCD.
