courage is not the absence of fear,
but fear faced with faith and prayer

thank you to a dear friend for reminding  me of this quote.  as a leo who prides herself on being independent and daring, getting real about --and facing--my fears has been a crucial challenge.

i fear i do not know what i am doing.
i fear i have forgotten how to dream.
i fear that i do not have a plan.

fear is false evidence appearing real

but my goal is to get there and to be.
my plan is to be present.  perhaps i do not know where i will be.  san diego? the bay? new york?  (somewhere between the golden gate and the brooklyn bridge).  i simply only trust that i will know when i get there.

what is the most universal
human characteristic: fear? or laziness?

- from Waking Life

a preoccupation with fear (the word, the concept, the universality) nagged me at the beginning of the art in action retreat.

i fear i've already written my best poem ever, and it's all downhill from here.

but then i got to paint, doodle, drum, carve cardboard into puppets, walk a labyrinth, breath fresh air, make new friends...

my life is a poem, not a draft, but always a work in progress.

our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
it is our light, not our darkness, which most frightens us.  we ask ourselves, who am i to be beautiful, talented, fabulous, gorgeous?
actually, who are you not to be?
your playing small doesn't serve the lord.
we were born to make manifest the power of god that is within us.  it's not just in some of us.  it's in everyone.
as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.  as we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
- Nelson Mandela, inaugural address

the first time i read this quote, i thought it ridiculous.  why would anyone fear being powerful?

then i looked around at my amazing friends,
at my reflection in the mirror.  i have to laugh at how often i see us question are abilities and talents.  our timidity and insecurity is human, but so often totally uncalled for.

we give rise to ego, by being insecure.
