| Hyper-Calvinism and Calvinism Contrasted |
| There are some who think that Calvinists believe that: *God from all eternity has acted to irresistibly compel men towrd sin and unbelief. *Men have no will of their own, and secondary causes are of no effect. *God does not command everyone to repent. *It is wrong to evangelize. *Assurance of election must be sought prior to repentance and faith. *Men who have once sincerely professed belief are saved regardless of what they later do. *The grace of God does not work for the betterment of all men. *Saving faith is equivalent to belief in the doctrine of predestination. Let me state emphatically that these are NOT Calvinist beliefs. Rather, these are the beliefs of Hyper-Calvinists. Sadly, this confusion is all too common. Most people are unaware that Calvinism and Hyper-Calvinism are not one and the same and when they hear the term "Calvinism" they tend to overshoot and think of Hyper-Calvinism instead. The term "Hyper-Calvinism" is used to indicate the system of beliefs which goes beyond, and distorts, the beliefs of true Calvinism. Though no man will call himself a Hyper-Calvinist, any person who holds to the beliefs listed above is in fact a Hyper-Calvinist, NOT a Calvinist. |
