| Well...now you know "Why Surgery" Now...what IS this surgery! |
| I have decided to have the*Open RNY type of Gastric Bypass surgery done, and I have found a Bariatric surgeon who has performed surgery for 30 years and does about 6 RNY's per week. His name is Dr. C. Gary Cooper. His office is located in Chico, CA, only 110 miles away. I have a consultation appointment with him on May 23, 2000. I have waited for two months to get in to see him. ( I am adding this in April of 2001: My husband, John, is going to have his surgery laperscopically. Since my surgery in August of 2000, we have found a nearby doctor..... a Doctor Helmuth Billy....who does it laperscopically. He has an office in Truckee CA and does the surgery in Roseville CA) Weight Loss Surgery has improved tremendously over the years. I have read a book on the history of it from the old intestinal bypass days to the current safer methods. The risks of this surgery are less than the risks I am heading for with my slow, steady weight gain. So....Im off to my adventure! As enthusiastic as a candle in the wind!! |

| *The whole idea of Open RNY surgery is to divide the upper part of the stomach from the lower part using three rows of staples. This upper portion becomes the main stomach (or pouch). This part of the stomach has thicker skin and it stretches less easily. The small pouch that is made, is about the size of your thumb. All of the digestive juices are in the lower section that has been divided off with staples. So, when one eats their 2 tablespoons of a meal (and this meal MUST be high in protein and vitamins), the food sits in that pouch and one stays full for a long time. Water is not to be consumed with the food, or else the food will rush through. However, drinking a lot of water during the day is a MUST. Now, where do you suppose the food in that upper pouch goes? It must go somewhere, since there is no way for it to get into the bottom of the stomach. Well, a part of the small intestine is surgically attached to this pouch. The hole going into this small intestine is very small and that slows down the movement of the food too. Once the food reaches the intestine, it slowly meets up with another part of the intestine that is connected to the lower stomach and, there, all the digestive juices meet up with the food, and things go normally from there. The food going directly to that attached small intestine is supposed to help one feel satisfied sooner. One of the "good" things about this setup is that when one eats MORE than just a TINY amount of sugar or fat, and it hits that small intestine "raw" (with no digestive juices yet mixed in), there is an awful effect that results. It is called "dumping." It involves, sweating, nausea, and rapid heart rate...nothing life-threatening, but not at all fun and quite an aversion to doing it again. There are two types of RNY Gastric Bypass surgery also: The OPEN RNY, involves being opened up from stem to stern, but the doc can see clearly, what he/she is doing. The LAP RNY is done laperscopically, with only 8 or less small holes in the skin. Less invasive, but still a bit experimental. Although there are more and more being trained, very few doctors do it in the U.S. Do you want a more professional explaination, including drawings to clarify what I described? | There are many types of weight lose surgery, but I have chosen to get the Roux-en-Y (RNY, named after the doctor (Roux) who created it and the Y because the intestine ends up in the shape of a Y. |
