My name is Joy Marion. I am a graduate student in Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin. A year and a half ago, I took a class on young adult literature where I was introduced by my instructor to two books Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher and Ophelia Speaks edited by Sara Shandler. These books brought back many memories of my teen years. Further reading took me to several other books including: Seen and Heard by Mary Motley Kalergis, Our Boys Speak by John Nikkah, Real Boys' Voices by William S. Pollack, and Voices from the Streets: Young Former Gang Members Tell Their Stories interview and photographs by S. Beth Atkin. I promised myself at the end of the class that I would go back and produce a whole project on the area of teen girls and loss of self in early adolescence. The question I wanted to answer was: what are the factors involved here and how can we help develop a society of stronger, more self-assured teens that will grow into strong successful adults? This bibliography is a small attempt to answer these questions for myself. If one teen girl finds, through this site, a way to a stronger self, I will have in some small way succeeded in answering this question. This bibliography is not meant to contain an exhaustive list of books and web sites on these subjects. Virtually, all of the books were selected from the shelves of the El Paso High School and El Paso Public Libraries. Most of the web sites came from these books. Think of this bibliography as a beginning point, as a summer�s exploration. Thank you Linda Rivera for your most loving friendship and guidance in developing a plan, making book selections, and directing my thoughts in the way I should go. Thank you Laurel Indalecio. I could never have created this web site and figured out all the picky details without your wonderful creative mind and patience to guide me. I am most grateful to both of you. You have each served as a most wonderful role model to me in the creation and development of this web site. I dedicate this site to both of you. |
