Conversations from the "Write On Chronicles"
Part 1 - Scalped
* Ouch, that hurts.
- It should. Our hair is not meant to be combed. Sit still.
* Yeah, thats easy for you to say. Your hair is locked.
- Do you want flat twists or braids?
* Braids.
- Up or down?
* Up.
- I cant believe after two years of wearing your hair natural, you still dont know how to care for it.
* I will admit I dont. I wore perms for 15 years. Going natural is a major change.
- But dont you like the freedom of natural hair?
* Yes. I dont worry about the weather. And my hair looks and feels healthier. It just the combing that hurts.
- Again, our hair is not meant to be combed. Period. The coils in our hair create locks naturally.
* You mean I don't need to go to a lockitian to start hairlocks?
- No. We can start locks by simply washing our hair. Our hair creates beautiful attractive hairlocks that can be worn in braids, african rolls (formerly french), or ponytails.
* That's great!
- It truly ends the enslavement of hair woes.
* Is it true perming puts a blue film on the brain?
- Im not sure, but Ive heard that too.
* Why doesnt more sisters embrace their natural beauty?
- Euro-society has made them erase the knowledge of themselves. Like you, they dont know how to care for it. They feel perms are more convenient plus brothers lean more toward perm heads.
* Ha! Most brothers just cut their hair off.
- Hair is a big issue for black females but a lot of people dont understand what we deal with. I know God doesnt make mistakes. I love the curls. There. How do you like it?
* Its cute. Thank you.
- Youre welcome. So are you on your way to class?
* Yeah.
- Call me when you get home or tomorrow. Peace and love.
* Ok. Peace and love.
