Love and Theft...

Love and Theft is Dylan's latest studio album, and is what many consider to be one of Dylan's best. The album was released on September 11th 2001, and bizarrely there are quite a lot of images in Love and Theft which seem to be connected to this.

The imagery of "Love and Theft" is interesting. Although it is difficult to analyse lyrics, with his style being as diverse as it is dense. However, concentrating on a few key songs of Love and Theft will make life somewhat easier:
  • Po' Boy
  • Sugar Baby
  • Bye and Bye

These songs offer diverse interpretations of the theme of "Love and Theft". One critic has said "All Pop Music is Love and Theft", and to an extent that may be true

Thus, it is important to consider the images Dylan uses in the album, by concentrating on these songs.

Po Boy

Po Boy has various funny lines in it, such as:

"I say how much you want for that, I go into the store, man says three dollars, alright I say will you take four"

"Knockin' at the door, I say who is it where you from? Man says "Freddie" I say "Freddie who" He says "Freddie or not here I come"

"Othello Told Desdemona "I'm cold cover me with a blanket. By the way what happened to that poisoned wine?" She says "I gave it to you, you drank it"

Sugar Baby

Sugar Baby is a more mournful song than Po Boy. Lines to back this up include:

"I got my back up to the sun, cos the light is too intense"

"Can't turn back, you can't come back, sometimes we push too far"

"One day, you'll open your eyes and you'll see where we are"

Bye and Bye

Bye and Bye is a light hearted swing song, with humorous lines such as:

"I'm sitting on my watch, so I can be on time"

"Bye and Bye, on you I'm casting me eye"

"I'm painting the town, swinging my partner around"

"Well the future for me is already a thing of the past"
