In 1923, my grandfather left California and returned to Rosais to marry his "little girlfriend" from childhood, Maria Inacio Silveira. Jose lost his mother at the age of two and was raised by his future wife's paternal grandparents, Manuel Jose da Silveira and Carolina Vicencia de Bettencourt (not in picture). |

Jose Silveira Goncalves Sr. and Jose Silveira Goncalves Jr. Father and Son - Both emigrated to California when they were young and then returned to Rosais, Sao Jorge to marry and raise their families. My great-grandfather lived and worked in Red Bluff from 1876 to 1888. My grandfather stayed in California from 1913 to 1923. He lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Milbrae and in Milpitas, on a Ranch where The Great Mall now sits. Later on, he and his brother and a couple of friends opened a Dairy business in Crows Landing, California. My grandfather's picture was taken around 1913, in Suisun, CA, at Brady's Studio. His father's picture is from around 1890. |

My Goncalves family branch is related to many other families through marriage. Since the mid 1800's, just in Rosais, we have blended in with Cunha, da Rosa, and Luis (some Luis go by Oliveira). |
