La Enterprise descubre alrededor del planeta Omega IV a la USS Exeter, cuya tripulación ha sido reducida a cristales a causa de un virus. Contagiados, Kirk, Spock y McCoy bajan al planeta para buscar una solución. Ahí encuentran al capitán de la Exeter que, en violación de la Primera Directiva, ha utilizado los phaser contra la población local.

Este episodio fue escrito en 1965 como uno de los posibles pilotos de la serie.

have slurred the meaning of the words, «We the people of the United States, in
order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic
tranquillity, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and
secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our posterity do ordain and
establish this Constitution...». These words and the words that follow werw not
written only for the Yangs, but for the Kohms as well...

Kirk: They must apply to everyone or they mean nothing! Do
you understand?
Kirk: We merely showed them the meaning of what they were fighting for. Liberty and freedom have to be more than just words.
