education/formation: He was destined to the ecclesiastic career, because during a pastoral visit of Dom Antônio Viçoso to Anteater [Tamanduá] (nowadays Itapecerica), MG, Brazil, this one has taken Pedro José Chelles, because he was fatherless and his widowed mother was very poor, to the Seminary of Mariana [Seminário de Mariana], MG, Brazil. In the book of Matriculation of Seminarists, 1844-1853 [Matrícula de Seminaristas, 1844-1853], at sheet 192, is registered that "Pedro José Chelles (Famulus) Matriculeted himself on 7th of February of 1853. Paid by Mr. Bishop" ["Pedro José Chelles (Famulo) Matriculou-se a 7 de Fevereiro de 1853. Pago pelo Sr. Bispo"]. Famulus is a schoolboy that doesn´t pay, changing work by study. Six monthes before to being ordained (1855/57), he asked to be dispensed to the Bishop, alegating lack of vocation to the ecclesiastical career. This one then would have offered him the office of teacher in a School of Sabará, MG, Brazil, of Dr. Aniceto Symphronio de Abreu, Medical, who has sent a letter to the Bishop, asking for the indication of one professor.

And, in the year of 1875, he figures as Substiture of Inspector of Public Instruction [Suplente de Inspetor da Instrução Pública], and Teacher of Philosophy [Professor de Filosofia], in Sabará, MG, Brazil.

diverse: He was an allaways happy person and liked to tell jokes. He was a joker, it is reported, and a little carouser. And also, sometimes, insolent. Amost always he was riding a horse. AAT this epoch it was usual the couples treat themselves formally and he called his wife as "Mrs. Chiquinha" [ "Dona Chiquinha], while she treated the husband as "Seu Chelles" ("Mr. Chelles").

residence: He lived in Sabará, MG, Brazil, in the Rosary Square [Largo do Rosário], next to the church, in a house that woulld have been "given him as gift" ["dada de presente"] by his "co-godfather" ["compadre"] Commendatory Mello Vianna, a portuguese, father of Fernando de Mello Vianna, that has been President of Minas Gerais [Presidente de Minas Gerais], and Vice-President of the Republic [Vice Presidente da República].
