Urban Myths is a site for young people in Manchester to write about anything at all that they find interesting. As expected many topics are covered but rubber and wellington boots is one of the most popular topics.
MADE TO WEAR WELLIES

Posted by James

My mum and dad were very strict about what I wore as a teenager. The wellingtons boot and rubber rainmac were a permanent fixture of my fashion wardrobe from about 10 to 20 years of age. There was no question of me refusing to wear them, although, at times I didn't like having to, as my parents would not enter into any such discussion.

My wellies were always green or black although when I started college , mum bought me a navy pair. My mac was the traditional off white rubber mac which were very fashionable.
How times have changed!!

My parents were older and very old fashioned in how they made me dress. I wore a combination of wellies and shorts until the age of fifteen and received a great deal of slagging as a result. Nothing could persuade my parents to change. Shorts were worn in the middle of winter and wellies on hot summer days. Needless to say I was slagged a lot at school. It's nice to see that I was not alone in wearing wellies but I would like to hear from other males or females who suffered similar acute embarrassment.

I didn't enjoy wearing them as a teenager 'cos nobody else wore them my age. Now I wear yellow rainsuits and wellies or a nice cape. I do enjoy wearing them as they keep me dry when everyone else is getting wet. What about you? Do you have raingear?

My parents were also very strict about what I wore as a teen. I had to wear wellies and a yellow rubber rainmac always on bad weather and sometimes even when the weather was fine until I finished school with 20. How embarrassing it was.
I was not brave enough to challenge my parents order because they were very strict.
My husband wants us to get wellies for the winter.

I'd like to ask other people what they think about this situation which has arisen.

My husband wants us to get wellies for the winter. Now, I haven't ever worn wellies and the thoughts of wearing them in front of friends, family and neighbours makes me very embarrassed.
My husband says we need them for the winter and he is planning to buy us both a pair whether I go to the shoe shop with him or not.
He says he wore wellies until he was 18-19 years of age. We are both in our late 20s now.

Any advise to offer me?
