Scientific Method

Daniel opened the door and practically shouted at Jack, “You came!”, then turned around and headed back into the apartment.  Jack followed him in and closed the door behind himself.

“Well, ye-ah.  I get a call from you at 6 AM on Saturday morning saying, and I quote, ‘Get your butt over here right now,’ and I’m gonna be a little curious.”

Daniel bounced down into the living area and turned, placing his hands on his hips.  He was wearing blue jeans and a large white button-down shirt untucked and hanging to his thighs.  His eyes were slightly red and unnaturally bright.

“I knew you’d come.”  He waved one finger at his visitor.  “You know why I knew?  Because I figured it out!  I finally got it!”  He chuckled maniacally and did a little dance.  Jack flashed to an unfortunate image of Daniel in a white room.

“Daniel…”

“You like me,” he challenged.

“Uh, yes Daniel, I do.”

“No, I mean you really like me!”

“Of course I do, you’re a good guy.”

“Nonononononono.”  He took a step toward Jack and jabbed the finger at his face.  “You love me.”

“Yes, Daniel, I love you.”  He assessed the local environment.  It was more disordered than usual.  Daniel’s journals were scattered on one patch of floor, and a cardboard box of photographs spilled out onto another.  There were numerous coffee cups cluttering the flat surfaces, some half full, others half empty.  Large sheets of paper covered with notes connected by thickly drawn lines littered the dining table.  The air of chaos was evident.  “Are you on something, Daniel?  Have you been drinking?”

The younger man began pacing in quick strides, punctuated by brief stops to address Jack directly.  “I’m perfectly fine.  Especially since it all came together.  There were all these clues.  I mean, I knew that I loved you…”

“What?”

“Don’t interrupt.  But you!  It was necessary to compile quite a lot of data before a scientific evaluation could be carried out.  I’m quite bright, you know.”

“Yes, Daniel, you’re quite bright.  Did you sleep at all last night?”

Daniel stopped and the finger was elevated prominently in the air.  “Ah ha!  Sleep!  Sleep is a conspiracy to keep me from achieving my full potential.  It is designed to turn my mind off and slow down my cognitive processes.  When sleep is overcome, real progress can be made.  I know a whole lot of stuff.  I’m really smart, you know.”

“We already established that.”

“Well, I am.”

“Yes, Daniel.”

He was starting to look agitated.  “But I AM!”

“Daniel…”

“With enough time and a proper analytical structure I was able to establish relationships between the different factors of the equation, correlate the variables, and prove my hypothesis.”  Daniel took another step closer to Jack and the outer edge of the finger formed a straight line between their two noses.  Daniel cocked his head and glared.  “You love me!”

“Daniel, let’s sit down and talk about this calmly.”

Daniel gripped his hand, hauled him forcibly over to the sofa and pushed him to sit.  He stood in front of Jack and bent over, leaning one hand on the back of the sofa.  The other hand, the one with the finger, bent at the wrist and began to wave in Jack’s face.

“You love me!”

“Yes, Daniel, I love you.”

“Yes you do!”

“Yes, I do.”

“You can’t deny it.  Youdoyoudoyoudoyoudoyoudo.”

“Daniel, I’m not denying it.”

Daniel grabbed Jack’s shoulders and pushed him down to lie on his back.  He then climbed right on top of him, all elbows and knees in uncomfortable places.  The finger prodded his chest.

“I will not be taken in by misdirection and subterfuge any more.  I have solved the puzzle fair and square and I GET TO KEEP THE PRIZE!”

“Yup, Daniel.  You get to keep me.”

Daniel’s head dropped to Jack’s shoulder.

“Yes, you’re mine now.”

“I’m yours.”

There was silence.  Jack looked down at the face below his.  Daniel was asleep.  He wrapped his arms gingerly around his human blanket and could practically feel the excess energy racing through the limbs, which twitched occasionally.

Suddenly Daniel’s head lifted and he said, “And don’t think that you aren’t in a lot of trouble for keeping this from me for such a long time!”

“Quaking in my boots, here.”

The head was down again.  The face snuffled and nuzzled and began to drool.  Out for the count, this time.

Jack settled in more comfortably.  He craned his neck, and then said softly, “Yes, he shoots, he scores.”  The TV remote control was on the end table behind his head.  Jack’s long arm zeroed in on it flawlessly.

Flicking on the set, he began hunting for his favourite Saturday morning cartoons.  Might as well take it easy for a while, rest up.  He didn’t think that either he or Daniel would be getting very much sleep that night.
