We started building our house in June, 1998.  It was barely finished in time for us to move in the night of our wedding.
It sits on a 1.2 acre lot that is nearly completely covered with tall pine trees.  It has 943 square feet and has two bedrooms and one bathroom.  The living room and kitchen are combined into one large room that spans the width of the house and is accented by the cathedral ceiling which is covered with yellow pine.  The walls are also yellow pine in the living room and are accented by the triangular windows above.  These windows are the focal point of the house when you enter onto the large covered porch from the walkway en route to the front door.
As you enter onto the porch from the walkway, you see the rectangular lawn which is to the right of the house in this picture.  The lawn is one of only two areas on the lot that is not covered by trees.  The lawn is 50 feet by 100 feet and is flat and level.  I covered the rectangle with San Augustine grass.  We have white azaleas along the banister of the porch and white crepe myrtles along the lawn on the side nearest the road (which is where this picture was taken).
Behind the house, out of view of this picture, I am in the process of creating a grassy courtyard.  This is the second area not covered by trees.  The courtyard is surrounded by a circle of large trees and highlighted by a single, young oak in the center.  The courtyard will have four terraces with 10 inch steps between.  A low stone wall encompassing the courtyard is planned for the future.
In front of the house, the land is left to nature where pine needles create a thick carpet and yucca thrive.  A few sassafrass saplings are present--I try to keep them thinned out so as to not block the view.
