"James M. Alderman was drafted into the Confederate Army in 1862 and served under the leadership of Gen. Sterling Price in Gen. Douglas Cooper's division. Upon the ending of the Civil War he returned to his wife and three children in Collin County, TX. They then moved to Kansas City where J.M. was born and then back to historic Brownville. Here he operated a flat boat ferry across the missouri River. It is believed to be the first licensed ferry on the river. In 1892 James and Sarah moved to Newport to be near their sons and their families, William and James Madison. Another son, Sterling Price was at Long Pine." "Matt" was noted for being an excellent marksman and won numerous awards for this. . .(taken from Rock County Centennial p. 126". (Source: Jim Alderman).

Hartwell Allen Alderman, born in 1832, was the oldest of twelve children, ten of whom lived to maturity. He married Mary Ann Hardy in 1852 and the three youngest and last listed children in this census record are theirs. Hartwell Alderman, when the war broke out, joined Company I, 45th Virginia on May 31, 1861 at Wytheville and was promoted to 4th Sgt. in the company. He apparently reenlisted in the spring of 1862 and then later, in the following winter, received word that the oldest son was critically sick, and came home on an unauthorized leave. The child (Henry) died January 2, 1863. In the meanwhile, the authorities had issued papers for his arrest since he had no leave. He was picked up and court-martialed, but soon he left the company and with his brother John went to West Virginia through the lines to enlist in the Union Army. Probably the treatment he had received had something to do with his decision and no doubt his antislavery beliefs (Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation a few months earlier) had something to do with it. He had relatives in Highland County, Ohio and he went there. From there he served an enlistment in Company K, 138th Ohio Infantry and then later enlisted into Company M, 13th Ohio Cavalry. With the latter unit, he was a part of General Sheridan's Cavalry in the last campaign of the war. He came home after the war and was engaged in many different enterprises, holding public office during the Reconstruction days. He died in 1899.

Churchwell J. Alderman was not listed with the rest of the children in this census record; it may be that he was away from home at the time. He was mustered into Company G, 63rd Virginia on Mary 15, 1862 and then transferred to Company I of the same regiment on Jan. 17, 1863. He went to Ohio about a week after his brothers from the 45th Virginia went there. He is said to have served in the Union Army, although I have not obtained his service record. He married Charlotte Morris after the war and did not return to Carroll until several years after the war. He eventually settled near Hebron and died in Texas in 1899.

"Chesley served as both a Confederate and Union soldier during the Civil War. While serving as a Confederate soldier he came home to check on the family and was caught by the Union army and given the choice of joining the Union army or becoming a prisoner of war. After Chesley and Rachel were married for several years, he came home early one afternoon from working the fields and found Rachel and a neighbor in a very compromising position. Chesley and Rachel argued and he found out that several of the children may not be his. Chesley left his family and married Penelope McCracken."

Aris W. Alderman, born in 1846, was mustered into Company F, 4th Virginia Reserves on May 16, 1864 at Hillsville. He was transferred to Company K from this county. The 4th Reserves, except for the battle at Saltville, in Lee's surrender was headed eastward with the rest of the southwestern command, to link up with Lee's army. The 4th Reserves learned of Lee's surrender before they reached that army and then simply disbanded. The family tradition is that Aris had the foresight to bring home a mule from the wagon train and thus passed up almost everyone else who was on foot and as a result was the first to bring home the news that the war was over. He married Paulina Hardy Webb (a war widow) in 1869 and they eventually settled near Hebron where Aris died in 1929.

"Although I have not made a practice of describing every person listed in the 1860 census, especially the children, I will, this one time, make an exception and point out that the George W, age 3, was my grandfather "Wash" Alderman. He was four years old when the war broke out and in the course of a lifetime which spanned the Civil War, the industrialization of this country, one World War, the great depression and part of another World War (he died in 1943) he taught school, ran a country store, and farmed.
