The AH-64A Apache has 4 main weapon systems. The first system includes the AGM (Air to Ground Missile) 114 HellFire
Missiles which are usually on the inboard store. These missiles have a range of about 6 kilometers (5 miles). HellFire missiles are used for destroying ground targets such as SAM (Surface to Air Missile) sites and vehicles such as hummers, jeeps, trucks, and tanks. These missiles are also used for destroying ammo dumps, fixed emplacements, and buildings such as command posts, and enemy headquarters. The second system is the 70mm M261 Hydra Rocket pod which is usually on the outboard store. This rocket pod can have 7-19 rockets in one pod. These rockets are fired in salvos which means 2,4, or 8 rockets can be fired at one time. These Hydra rockets have a range of about 3 kilometers(About 2 miles). These rockets are used for destroying mostly ground targets including vehicles such as hummers, jeeps, trucks, and tanks. These rockets are also used for destroying SAM sites and fixed emplacements. The third weapon system is the 30mm cannon, which is located just under the front of the helicopter. The gunner/copilot does not have to aim this cannon to hit a designated ground or air threat. He or she can simply turn their head toward the target the gun then moves in the direction in which they moved their head. The computer will then automatically lock on the target with in 1.5 kilometers(about 1 mile), then the copilot/gunner can fire. The fourth system is the Air to air missile system which is usually located on the wing tip of the helicopter. This system includes both Sidewinder and Stinger missiles, which have a range of about 6 kilometers (5 miles). These missiles are used for destroying enemy aircraft.
