The M261 rocket launcher is a 19-tube 2.75 inch rocket launcher used on the AH-64A Apache/AH-64D Apache Longbow, OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, AH-1F Cobra, and UH-60A Black Hawk. The M261 rocket launcher is used with the MK66 rocket motor, which replaced the MK40. The MK66 has a reduced system weight and provides a remote fuze setting interface. The M261 is reusable, but not repairable. The M261 is classified Standard A. The M261 19-tube launcher, NSN 1055-01-071-0064, LIN L45131, is a Class VII major item, and is free issue to all U.S. Army units that are authorized the item. One M261 Hydra rocket pod launcher can hold 19 70mm(2.75 inch) rockets in one pod, as shown in this schematic. These rockets are fired in salvos of 1,2,or4. They are used for destroying ground targets such as jeeps, hummers, trucks, tanks, anti-aircraft vehicles, and SAM(Surface to Air Missle) sites. However unlike Hellfire and Tow missles which automatically lock on the target, the gunner/co pilot has to aim these rockets by positioning the helicopter until the designated target is in the cross hairs. These rockets can also be used to destroy enemy air threats such as fighter planes such as MIG-29 Fulcrum, and SU-27 Flanker and other helicopters such as the MI-24 Hind, and the MI-28 Havok.
