Unit House
The VS house was the home of Guadelupe Reyes, a local legend who had a
large family. One of her children, Bobby, was disabled by spinal
meningitis and there were no local services to help the disabled. So,
in 1973, she started El Valor, which means 'courage', in a local
church basement. A few years later the house was burned in a fire
(was it abandoned?). Pilsen MVS came to the neighborhood in 1981, but the volunteers
lived in rental housing. Pilsen MVS bought the house for $23,074.00 on
May 31, 1985. It was rehabilitated for a school project by
VSers working with carpentry students from Latino Youth, a local
alternative high school. The house still needs more rehabilitating!
The first floor (basement) contains a workshop and laundry room in the back and an apartment in the front that has been used for a children's project space. The apartment is separate from the rest of the living quarters and would be ideal for a married couple who wanted to do VS, but who wanted a bit of privacy. The second and third floors are living space with six bedrooms. The backyard is a small, walled garden (or weed patch, depending upon the involvement of the residents) with a large, wooden porch at each story of the house.
