Get Involved
There are lots of ways to help out the Pilsen MVS unit and this is who to email.
-
Be a contact between Pilsen MVS and a local agency. The Support
Committee always want more local neighborhood placements, but we
have not done well developing volunteer openings with agencies that
are located in Pilsen. Questions?
-
Are you good with your hands? Work on household building repairs,
painting, etc. There is always something that needs to be done.
Questions?
-
Manage the MVS building. This is a rotating position which oversees
day-to-day maintenance and hiring contractors when work needs done.
This position is selected and guided by the Pilsen Mennonite
Housing Committee and a stipend is available. Questions?
-
Become a VS Buddy. VS Buddys are area residents who can be a
listening ear, local resourse person, or a mentor (depending on
what the VSer wants) for a volunteer. The primary responsibility is to get
together with the volunteer once a month for a chat and perhaps a meal or something
fun. Questions?
-
Improve this website. Practice your HTML or help with the content.
There are probably a lot of other unit websites that you could look
at to get ideas about what things to add. More placement
information would be good. Do you have stories of experiences from
Pilsen VS? Please submit them.
Questions?
-
Do you have knowledge that would benefit volunteers who are new to
Chicago or other skills & resources you could share with the
unit? Be a local resource person.
There are many possibilities:
-
Bicycle repair
-
Medical advice
-
Help a VSer get a weekend refuge from inner-city life
-
Movies (on video tape) to lend
-
Have a car and willing to help with transportation
occasionally?
-
Help orient new VSers
