The Building of Midgard
In the late years of the Shee, many research worlds were created to test out different habitats. Each one was designed and built to emphasise a different environment. However, one stood out amongst all the others. It was Midgard, the project of the most contraversial Shee ever to live, Jal'ak Kalis.
Kalis was a student of ancient Shee myth,
and had a belief that secrets were held within the old legends.
Although he held high standing within Shee society, he was
considered by some to by eccentic, and a nutcase by the rest. He
had previously helped to design the Jotun, a race to protect the
Shee from any danger that they might encounter. Kalis had golden-coloured
skin, unlike most Shee, who were blue. He was highly intelligent,
and very lucky as well. Whenever one of his experiments blew up
his laboratory it always failed to kill him, or even hurt him at
all. He had strode confidently out of many a deep, smoking crater,
waving a wad of singed papers and claiming to know exactly what
had gone wrong that time.
He was given the Midgard project to keep him out of the way from
everybody else, but he took it as sign of faith from the Shee
Council. His best firend, Laius Mar'us, stood by him, except when
he was working, when it was safer to be behind several layers of
steel. Together they planned a world that could work without a
Shee presence, something the other world could not do.
The planet chosen was quickly terraformed.
Around half the planet was turned into ocean, and the rest
divided into three main contients. Large tracts of forest were
planet, and soon the planet was suitable for life. First the
Thirteen Gods were created, highly advanced Norns with genetic
and cybernetic powers. At first they were all obedient and kind,
but this soon changed with time. Under the Gods, Midgard
developed faster than any other planet. Large colonies of Norns
were introduced to different sections of the planet, isolated
from one another. These would eventually form the kingdoms and
empires in centuries to come.
Although many of the Shee on the project had severe doubts about
letting Grendels loose on Midgard, especially the special genome
designed by Mar'us to be far more violent and agressive. But they
were released anyway, along with the Etiins and all the sub-species
as well. After a year of watching over the fledgeling world, Jal'ak
realised that as long as the Shee remained, the world would not
develop.
Kalis was one of only a few Shee who knew of the presence of the Ljynii in the next galaxy. Their technology was more advanced than the pacifist Shee, and Jal'ak decided that something must be done. So he began work on a special project on Midgard, one which had the power to destroy the Ljynii. But he was recalled to Albia before it was finished to depart for the new homeworld. Exactly what it was remained a mystery for thousands of years. Three years after Midgard was completed, he left.
