JOE'S FAVORITE 50 RAP SONGS
What's Golden     Jurassic 5

"We're not balling
Or shot-calling
We take it back to the days of yes y'all-in'
We holding onto what's golden"

Ahhh, now that's more like it.  P-Diddy, listen and learn.  I'm finding the more songs come out, the more songs I hate.  This is the first new song in a while that I really love.  It dismays Stefan that I like it more than "Quality Control", but it dismays me that he hates on all of the cartoon movies.  Irrelevant, yes.  Now we're even though.  My only problem with Jurassic 5 so far is that from what I've heard so far, every song seems to be an introduction as to their style and why they're better.  I hope there's more that's about other stuff.  Like "Thin Line", with my second wife, Nelly Furtado.  It's good.  Listen to it.  Girls like Nelly Furtado make me wish I was Mormon and attractive.

Rock Superstar     Cypress Hill

"I remember the days when I was a young kid growin up
looking in the mirror, dreamin about blowin up
the rock crowd, make money, chill with the honeys
sign autographs or whatever the people want from me
it's funny how impossible dreams manifest"

I really like Cypress Hill's sound.  I just don't know and love that many of their songs.  I do know this one, though, and I do love it.  This song is good in my eyes because it's actually about something.  It kind of tells a story.  Neat, simple xylophonish beat with cool instruments throughout, actually.  Like a wheeler, this song is 18.

Keep Their Headz Ringin'     Dr. Dre

"When I flow, niggaz know, it's time to take a hike
Cause I grab the mic and flip my tongue like a dyke"

Two things that will never happen: me having sex with a dog and me not enjoying this song.  And come to think about it, you might be able to torture me to the point that I submit and have sex with a dog, but I don't think someone can control enjoying something, so I think I'll have sex with a dog before not enjoyingthis song.  This song: good.  And also, you find out that Dre is 6'1", 225.  And that he gets plenty of ass just like an astronaut.  Next.

Dear Mama     2-Pac

"And I could see you comin home after work late
You're in the kitchen tryin to fix us a hot plate
Ya just workin with the scraps you was given
And mama made miracles every Thanksgivin"

"And there's no way I can pay you back
But my plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated"

This song really might be the be 2-Pac's best song.  It is lyrically, at least to me.  If anyone ever says rap is just thugs rapping about money and sex, refer them to this song.  The only reason this song isn't top-10 for me was because it's kind of slow, but that's dumb.  It's probably top 15 for me now.

1st of tha Month     Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

"Hey my nigga we havin' a wonderful day and I won't fuck wit me. Why?
Cuz it's the 1st of tha month and now we smokin',chokin',rollin' blunts
And sippin' on 40 ounces thuggin' come come we got the blessed rum
"

This is the song that Bone was meant to write. It just feels so honest.  The tone of the song is so joyful, and they all sing with such "happy" tones.  Even if you don't choose to celebrate the 1st like this, if you've ever worked, I bet you can relate to this song.  Especially those months where something unexpected comes up, and you're out of money for about a week before payday.  You feel so great when you pick up that check.  The only reason it's not higher is ....I don't know.  I can't think of a reason.  I don't condone cocaine.  There you go.  That'll have to be the reason.

The Way I Am     Eminem

"When a dude's gettin bullied and shoots up his school
and they blame it on Marilyn (on Marilyn).. and the heroin
Where were the parents at? And look where it's at
Middle America, now it's a tragedy
Now it's so sad to see, an upper class ci-ty
havin this happenin (this happenin)..
then attack Eminem cause I rap this way (rap this way)..
But I'm glad cause they feed me the fuel that I need for the fire
to burn and it's burnin and I have returne
d"

Sorry about the length of this quote.  The song is just so amazing to me.  You know how Shakespeare wrote in iambic pentameter?  This is kind of similar.  Instead of 10 syllables and accenting every other syllable, starting at the second, Eminem uses 12 syllable lines and accents every third, the whole way, without a break from the format.  If you think that's not hard, how about you try to think of words that rhyme, tell a story, and sound O.K. with this 3rd syllable emphasis.  That's what I thought.  I'm not sure if this song ever really got popular.  I know it didn't get the recognition it deserved.  Even with how much everyone played Eminem that summer, this song didn't get enough love.  I'll start making up for it by giving it the sweet 14 spo
t.
