JOE'S FAVORITE 50 RAP SONGS
Ugly     Bubba Sparxxx

"What you need to do
Is just admit you love me
The South has always been Dirty
But now it's gettin' ugly"

You have no idea how long I held out on this song.  I didn't want to like it.  It's a white guy from a trailer.  Just a pudgy white guy.  I couldn't help it though.  I love this song.  This song may be one of the more quote-heavy ones on this list.  "I ain't choose to rhyme.  Rhymin' chose me".  "Cuz' ya'll be bull-shittin'.....Spittin' that booty-chatter".  When I hear this, the only word that comes to mind is "gem".  Seriously though, this is one of the more fun songs out there.  Simple rhymes that seem to be saying more than anything anyone else has been saying.  Come on Bubba, let's go.

Handle the Vibe     Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

"
Niggas wit heat, who could it be, nobody but them T-H-U-G's with artillery
We come in peace nigga please freeze
Put 'em on they knees nigga don't even breathe and these
Are the warriors killas destroyin ya you're gonna die"

Good beat, good flow, but do you always have to be so violent?  Always talkin' about yer AKs and grenades and in this one sawed-off shotguns.  I really liked this song too, but then, as always, I read the lyrics and found that they're dumb.  Still has a great sound though, and that's a big part.  A little side-note:  this spot was originally for "Dear mama by 2-Pac".  I looked back over the list and realized that it's way better than I was giving it credit for.  This damn list....so hard to do.  I hate you all.

Murder Was the Case     Snoop Doggy Dogg

"'I'll make your life better than you can imagine or even dreamed of
So relax your soul, let me take control
Close your eyes my son'
My eyes are closed"

Great song, great beat.  With the quote that I picked, I think Snoop could have taken this song in a different direction.  It could have been a neat little story.  I think it might have been better, but you'll notice that I haven't released any successful rap songs, so maybe it's better this way after all.  I think the background music matches the tone of the song really well.  I love this whole C.D.  I have been accused by some to play "the same shit too much", and I have hidden behind the fact that I'm not even there when people start to play this C.D. on repeat.  What I've never admitted until now is that if I was there, I would play it on repeat.

Quality Control     Jurassic 5

"We harass niggas like we was the po-po"

Jurassic 5 has the most rhythmically soothing songs.  They don't have any really great songs yet, but the more I hear of them, the more I like them.  The above quote isn't really a good indicator about what the song is about.  It just makes me giggle, so I picked it.  The song's actually not really about anything, except maybe some kind of intro......no, it's about nothing, but it's good.

Whoomp!  There it is     Tag Te
am

"Slam dunk it stick it flip it and ride
That B double O T Y oh m
y"

The one that started this crazy-ass shit, in my opinion.  Tootsie Roll, Bombs over Baghdad, any of these insane songs owes something to Tag Team.  By "crazy-ass shit", I mean whistles and yelling and dancing happening in the background of the song.  How can I hear dancing, you ask?  I just can.  Slam dunk it, stick it, flip it and ride that B double O T Y, oh my!  What a great line!  And what a great son
g.

Thuggish Ruggish Bone     Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

"We're not against rap
We're not against rappers
But we are against those thugs (thugs thugs)"

I still remember the first time I heard this song.  My friend came running in with a tape and said that I had to hear it.  We had been busy listening to the Aladdin soundtrack at the time, and laughing, because we discovered that if you hold the play button in just before where it sticks, it makes it go fast and chipmunky.  Man, that was pretty funny.  Oh.  Oh yeah.  Uh, he told us that we had to listen to it.  His brother, Ki, had gotten it before it was released somehow.  I listened.  I wasn't too impressed.  I figured it must be because I was white or something.  Little did I know how much I'd listen to this group in the future.  This song grew on me after a while, and I vowed to Bone that if I ever made a hip hop list, I'd include them for at least 10% of the songs.  Here we are, and here ya go, Bone.

I Got Five On It     Luniz

"Playa, give me some brew an I might just chill
but I'm the type that like to light another joint like Cypress Hill "

Stefan swears this song is performed by Mark Morrison.  It's not, I swear.  This is a great song.  The reason I like the above quote:  he sounds kinda like the guy in Cypress Hill when he says it.  Neato.  Anyway, you've probably heard this beat in other songs.  Lots of them.  That's cuz it's good.  Luniz is my favorite one-hit-wonder of the 90's.
