Belief

Humans have, and always will have belief. We all believe in different things: Gods, Nature, Science, Magic.

The point of this short essay concerns the first: Gods. Many, many people on the Disc today believe in them, though not neccessarly the same ones. What would happen if one or more of the more popular gods was taken away.

The Hogfather was this year removed from human belief system implanted in out heads; this would have causes chaos had it not been for another personification, namely Death who took over as best he could. There was however a gap in belief, large enough for new gods to emerge.

This means that there must be a certain amount in the belief on the Disc. This is purely common sense; people must have things to believe in.

Belief however changes over time. At this particular time Om is an important god. In earlier centuries man worshiped gods that made the bread rised and generally helped around the home. Today we know it is the yeast that makes the bread rise, but that's not the point; belief makes people feel better in themselves. For some it gives a whole purpose in life.

Religion is a more specific form of belief. For people choosing to follow a religion rules to guide their lives are also given. Religion is not the only part of belief, indeed, it is a very small part. An atheist is not a disbeliever. He believes in a great many things; just not gods. An atheist is not without morals; they just aren't called the Commandments.

With so many religions in the world today you may ask: How do they know that their religion is the truth? This is entirly the wrong question. All religions are the truth, to that person anyway. They give them hope and morals.

In short, belief is there for a reason. We can't do without it. We wouldn't want too.
