Science and Math Resources for Visualization

What is Scientific Visualization?

Scientific visualization is making a picture....

...out of numbers.

Why bother with Visualization?

Students often have difficulty getting a "mental picture" of abstract concepts in middle and high school math and science. Visualization can help students gain a deeper understanding of these concepts by developing a model that students can manipulate.

A model can be a simple graph or a very complex simulation. We have included many different types of models, some developed using Microsoft Excel, some using Gnuplot, and some using AVS Express. See the Software page for more information about these programs.

Using Visualization Technologies in Your Classroom

Use the following links to find more information about using these tools in your classroom. If you have difficulty accessing any links, please contact us.
  • Data Exchange Contains posted data we have collected in our classrooms as well as links to sources of free data on the internet.
  • Lesson Plans contains plans that we have developed as well as some good ones we found on the web.
  • Resources is a listing of web resources pertaining to visualization in science and math.
  • Standards contains links to NC state and national standards for math, science, and technology education.
  • Software contains descriptions of the software used to develop the posted lessons as well as information on where to obtain it.

About Us

This site was developed as a result of the REVITALISE Program, a two-year program for middle and high school science and math teachers. The REVITALISE Program involves educators in rural Illinois and North Carolina with the goal of introducing visualization technologies to enhance teacher and student understanding of abstract concepts. The program was partly funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
