Lyman

Lyman entered the Garfield comic strip on August 7, 1978 as Jon Arbuckle's roommate and Odie's owner. Lyman's primary function was to give Jon someone to talk to, a role that was gradually assumed by Garfield. Though he reappeared briefly for Garfield's tenth anniversary comic strip (June 19, 1988), Lyman's last regular appearance was in 1983. Life can be rough for an out-of-work supporting comic strip character. What, if anything, happened to Lyman? Funny you should ask...

Irma

Irma is the waitress at an unnamed diner that is occasionally patronized by Jon and Garfield. Irma is a model waitress, that is, when she isn't abusing her customers or shaving her legs at the counter. Then again, the food isn't much either. Irma joined the strip on June 9, 1979, but she wasn't called Irma until October 19 of that year.

Liz

Dr. Lizard Wilson has been Garfield's veternarian since June 26, 1979. She treats Garfield like a patient, while she treats Jon like the plague. Still, Liz occasionally caves in and agrees to a date with Jon. The romance hasn't clicked however, primarily because Jon is affected with terminal geekitis.

The Mailman

Even though several different mailmen appeared in earlier Garfield comic strips, this particular character has been the Arbuckle postman since January 28, 1984. True to the code of the United States Postal Service, he has faithfully completed his rounds, in spite of rain, snow, dark of night, and maulings by one fat ferocious cat (namely, Garfield).
