Fast forward to the summer of 2001. I have been thinking about getting the car out to drive now that the kids are getting older, ages 10 and 15. Things have certainly changed over the past 25 years - I have changed. I am not looking for a "trailer queen" but a fun car to drive. The Internet is such a blessing now before research and buying parts was done over the phone or by snail mail. Before, I would get a name from a friend of a friend to follow up on parts leads or to do research. Sometimes this would take weeks. Now I have been able to get answers or parts overnight. I had taken this first summer to go over those mechanical areas that did not seem as important to me when I was 17 and restoring a car for show. All show - no go perhaps? I have met several fine individuals who have helped me out through the process of fine- tuning the mechanical aspects of the car to make a reliable touring vehicle. Parts are getting harder and harder to find so whenever possible, I try to pick up items as I find them at swap meets and such. Looking forward to the summer of 2005, the Chevy runs better than it ever has with minor repairs/updates to the ignition and braking systems and a new radiator. I take every opportunity when I am with my car to promote our hobby and the preservation of the old iron since we tend to see fewer and fewer examples out on the road. My 31 Chevy is still a part of our family after nearly 48 years. My girls still have the chance to ride in the open rumble seat of the same car I rode in when I was a kid. Kinda feels like a family treasure. Take time to enjoy life and share it with others, John L. |
