June 18, 2003 - Ready, set, go!
Dear Friends, the countdown to my Scandinavian adventures is rapidly progressing!  Last night I laid out all the clothes I have to take with me.  It means I'm going to spend three hours ironing and packing, because I have to take enough of everything due to the unpredictability of the weather.  Last year it was cold and rainy when I arrived in Uppsala and then suddenly we had a major heat wave.  So I decided, four pairs of pants, four sweaters, four long sleeve shirts, four short sleeve shirts, four tank tops, four T-shirts, and, of course, my unmentionnables.  I stacked all of that last night in a laundry basket just to see how much room it takes when it's folded, and I think it's doable.  If it won't all fit then I'll just subract one from each group of shirts.

Now then, yesterday I was thinking about how I want to go to Copenhagen.  I already had a room reserved there for the weekend of June 27.  Suddenly it dawned on me that if I didn't make reservations for a flight soon, I'd end up having to take a train for 5 or 6 hours.  So I started looking around for flights.  I found some flights out of Vasteras that were supposedly cheap (I didn't check the price for reasons you'll soon know), but to get to Vasteras from Uppsala for the two or three flights they have to Copenhagen per day would have required taking two trains, a bus, and a broomstick to get to the airport!

So I said to myself, "
JOHNNYLEEN, why don't you just see if Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has flights from Arlanda (Stockholm's major airport) to Copenhagen?"  So I did, and I got a flight for a reasonable price and time.  Plus, there's a train directly from Uppsala to Arlanda, so there!  It'll be fantabulous!  I'm staying at a guesthouse in downtown Copenhagen.  The picture of it looks like some huge building from the Enlightenment.  It has a terrace and the owners said there's always a party going on there.  Sounds like my kind of place, n'est-ce pas?

I may have mentioned to you all on another page that I'll be spending a weekend in Stockholm as well.  Friends of mine from England, M. and F., are coming to see me there the weekend of July 4.  My friends from Germany, Markus and Kirsten, wanted to come, too, but Kirsten just started a new job and can't get away.  Darn!  It would have been so much fun!

I've booked a room on the Malardrottningen.  That's a ship that Barbara Hutton of Woolworth fame used to own.  I think it was her 18th birthday present or something extravagant like that.  I stayed on it over a weekend last year and thought it was really neat.  It's in a harbor right there at Gamla Stan so it means everything is within easy walking distance.  Can't wait.

Now, Dear Readers, I suppose I really must end this, but not before I tell you about the freaky woman who glared at me on Sunday.  I was coming back from the subway, when I saw this woman coming toward me walking her dog.  I was marching along and felt I looked pretty fantabulous that day, but the wench looked me up and down as she approached me as though I had crawled out from under a rock!  Not only that, she continued looking at me as she passed by, twisting her head to sneer at me!  So without looking back, I yelled, "Take a picture next time.  It'll last longer."  I guess I told her!
