| February 2, 2007 - I am now a homeowner! |
| Dear Friends, finally I am a homeowner! On Jan. 5, I went to settlement and began the long process of moving all of my stuff back into the apartment. Now I get to start the whole ordeal of sorting through stuff. It's going to take a while and I have to admit it all seems a bit overwhelming, but I've made some progress. That said, I'm really happy with the all the renovations and the paints that were used. And I've reconciled myself to the fact that I'll be paying a mortgage that's double what my rent was. Luckily the first payment isn't due until March. Of course, my new status as homeowner has not made me freak-free. Last week I was out and about and this guy came up to me and just starting ranting like a maniac. He was saying that he's the sole provider for his aging parents and his father always misses the toilet because he has a cataract in his left eye, blah, blah, blah. But then he said he had had a really wonderful day, because he had found his IRS refund checks behind a dresser. Apparently, he thought he had deposited them, but hadn't. I frankly viewed that with skepticism, because you'd have to be a total idiot not to know whether you had deposited your refund. In addition, aren't those checks only valid for 90 days? Anyhoo, I didn't encourage him in his stories, merely responding with "really?" and "yeah" and "grunt". Then the other day I saw an elf. Well, I don't really believe in elves, but if they did exist, this chick I saw looked just like one. I saw her walking along in the subway, which is a veritable parade o' freaks. She was about 5' tall and had huge, huge eyes. Her face was kind of squished in and it vaguely reminded me of elf toys at Christmas time or the elves on "Rudolph". Truly different in an other-worldly way. But she wasn't carrying a box of Lucky Charms; oh wait, that would have made her a leprechaun; elves bake Keebler cookies.. So, I'm sure all of you are wondering if I'm going to make any fabu trips what with a mortgage and all. Well, yes, my dears, I am. On March 28 I will leave for Prague and be there until April 2. That's not really as long as I would like to stay, but I'm going with a friend and that's all the time he can afford. We're staying at the Four Seasons, which is not cheap, but I can swing it. The only problem is the flight. He wants to fly British Air, because he has some sort of deal where he'll get the flight for half-price. I've looked at B.A. and it would cost a little over $1,000 to go to Prague. Air France is about $600. You do the math, my mathematician geniuses and guess what my plans are. Besides, from what I saw of the schedule, B.A. has a 4-hour layover at Heathrow whereas Air France has an hour and a half at Charles de Gaulle, oui, oui. For New Year's Eve I went to see a production of "The Light in the Piazza" and had a wonderful dinner, with dancing, afterwards. I didn't know what to think of the play. It was good, but it was really more of an operetta than a musical. I think of a musical as having foot-tapping songs that you find yourself humming several days later. None of the music struck me in that manner. And often all the players would be singing in these strong operatic voices that were all in discord with one another. Don't get me wrong; I'm glad to have seen it, but it wasn't what I expected. I also recently went to see a production of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", which was eeeexxxxccellent. 2007 is getting off to a great start for me, n'est-ce pas? I'm getting kudos at work for my performance there, the theater season looks like it's going to be a good one, my fabu trip to Prague is coming up, I plan to go to Sweden this summer, and the big birthday is coming up. Yes, dear friends, in April I will finally turn 29 and some months ... again. Next entry Previous entry Go to diary entries Go back home |
