Certified Flight Instructor
The information below is what you'll need to have to be eligible to take the Certified Flight Instructor practical test. The numbers after the text lines are the FAR sections in which the requirement is specified. Under endorsements, "log" indicates the endorsement must be in the applicants log book. NOTE: A portion of the practical test for this rating must be done in a "complex" airplane. The FAA defines a complex airplane as one having retractable landing gear, a constant speed propeller and flaps (the flaps requirement is not an issue since most airplanes today have flaps).

The applicant is (usually) required to take two a knowledge (on a computer) tests and a practical (oral and flight) test to receive a Certified Flight Instructor rating. One of the knowledge tests is on the Fundamentals of Instruction. This knowledge test is not required if the applicant holds a teaching credential. The other knowledge test covers the elements of flight including:  principles of flight, aircraft systems, weather, safety of flight, airspace, charts, documents and much more. The passing score on the knowledge tests is 70%. The practical test is pass/fail.

Unlike the other ratings described here, the CFI rating requires both knowledge of how to fly (at the commercial pilot level) and how to teach. At this time in the San Jose FSDO most of the checkrides for this rating are being given by FAA inspectors at the FSDO. The good news about this is that the checkrides are free (except for airplane rental). The bad news is that the pass rate is well under 50%. The FSDO is determined to ensure the successful applicant is a competent teacher of aviation as well as a competent pilot at the commercial level.
