This class is taught at the level of a college freshman Statistics class.
You should have completed PCM III with a grade of B or better. To succeed
in this class, you will need to demand of yourself high standards and
real effort regularly applied throughout the year. You must read the text
and do the assigned homework as a minimum each day; you should meet with
a study group two to three times each week; you should come to see me
during Study Session with questions not answered during class as they
occur, not just before a test; you should arrange your personal schedule
of appointments, trips, athletic competition, etc so that it does not
interfere with your studies. If your preparation for this course is
adequate, and you apply these ideas every day, you will have no trouble
passing my class. Be warned, however: math is not a spectator sport! Just
as an athlete cannot excel in his or her sport by watching others do it,
you need to practice every day if you hope to make this team.
Here are my specific standards:
Attendance and Behavior:
I expect you here every day, on time, ready to work. I expect you to come
to class with all materials needed, and to begin work as soon as the
final bell has rung. I expect each student to behave in a polite manner
considerate of the rights and feelings of other students and the teacher at
all times. If you are not able to conduct yourself in such a manner, I
will ask you to leave the classroom. My top priority is for the students
who are in class to learn! Repeated unacceptable behavior will result in
phone calls home and the possibility of permanent removal from class with
a grade of F.
In general, you will not be allowed to make up work missed due to
truancy, unexcused absence or suspension. If you have an excused absence,
you must bring me a yellow slip from the attendance office that verifies
your status. Otherwise, your absence will be treated as unexcused and you
will not be allowed to make up work or turn in late work.
If you are absent on the day of a test you will receive an
automatic score of zero! The only exception is if your parent/guardian
calls me personally and tells me (or leaves a message on my voicemail) by
8 a.m. of the day of the test
that you will be absent.
Dropping the class:
You may drop this class without penalty until the end of the third full week
of school (September 22). After that date, you may drop but will receive
a WF on your transcript. In special cases I may allow a student to drop
without penalty as late as the end of the first quarter, if in my
judgment that student has made a consistent effort (as demonstrated by
attendance, class participation and homework), but is simply unable to
handle the material. (Note: If you entered this class despite not meeting
the prerequisites or by overriding your previous teacher's
recommendation, your only option is to take the WF). For more detail, see
the department policy posted in my classroom.
Grades:
To earn an A, you will need a 90% semester score. 80% is a B, 70% is a C and 60% is a D.
Below 60% is an F. Semester scores will come from homework, quizzes,
tests and a semester project. I
will lower my grading standards by one percent for those who have
demonstrated consistent effort throughout the semester. I define such effort as: no more than 5 absences for ANY reason
(except approved field trips and Mock Congress) and no more than 2
tardies for any reason during the semester, virtually all homework done (no
more than two homework scores of zero during the semester), and NO
instances of sleeping in class!!!
