| "It's a daunting enterprise, but Khouri is a specialist, and his command of the works and his instrument...enables him to go from sonata to sonata, all memorized, as though it were one of those 'and then I wrote...' performances. Significantly, he has a distinctive viewpoint and brings out the individuality of each sonata." San Francisco Chronicle |

| THE PIANOS: Piano expert John Khouri owns one of the largest private collections of fully restored early pianos on the West Coast. In his studio are six instruments built before 1833. In the late 18th Century and first half of the 19th Century, two types of pianos were developed. "Viennese" pianos were applauded for their clear sweet tone, light responsive action and efficient dampening mechanisms. "English" pianos were admired for their powerful bass, sturdy construction and full tone. Naturally, composers in the past wrote music that featured the finest characteristics of the instruments they themselves played. The audience member of today who is familiar with a work of Mozart, Beethoven or Chopin is transformed by the experience of hearing a piece performed on the historic instrument for which it was originally written. The listener discovers a remarkable range of expression and color available only on the early pianos and witnesses the unveiling of previously hidden magic within a centuries-old masterpiece. |
