Amidst
profound change in Camp John Hay’s look, character and purpose,
a nod to the past was earmarked to preserve the timelessness allure
that gained the Camp renown. A three hectare slice of the Camp
John Hay reservation was earmarked as historical core. It was
meant to preserve a portion of the Camp and provide a window on
time so that future generations may appreciate its historical
significance while basking in the enduring spirit and essence
of this beautiful environmental reserve.
As
the initial plans for the development of the Camp John Hay Historical
Core were underway, the idea of creating a history trail was born.
Designed to wind its way amidst the pines, it would offer not
just landscaped resting areas, but a recounting of the story of
Camp John Hay. Surely the setting would evoke a sense of times
gone by and give those that promenade that inimitable magic Camp
John Hay has casts on its guests for a hundred years.
Tucked
away just off the trail was a promontory that offered not only
wonderful vistas of pine clad hills, but also enough seclusion
to tantalize and elicit curiosity. A surprise awaiting discovery,
seeds of a secret garden have been planted to bloom to add a splash
of color and scent that can make a visit all the more unforgettable.
