Under Construction

Here's page one of the concert listings!! Lemme know if'n I've forgotten any!
Back to the Main Listings!

1987
September 3, 1987 - Exhibition Stadium, Toronto, Ontario
New Order / Echo and the Bunnymen / Gene Loves Jezebel
My first big concert! Sixteen and totally green, I'm going to see New Order!!! I know nothing about shows. I have seats way up and over to the side in the Exhibition Grandstands, I'm with a couple of alterna-gals from school, and I'm loving it!
For those of you who are too young to know, this ticket is pretty stacked for a mid-Eighties concert show. Bunnymen AND Gene Loves Jezebel?!? WOW! Okay, so Gene Loves Jezebel is not all that great, and even back then they weren't well regarded. With one big hit on their resume ('Desire', pronounced DEEEZAAIIIYEEUUHUR!), the band, fronted by two Welsh prettyboy twins, hit the stage and proceeded to give me my first great lesson in concertgoing: It is very easy to try too hard to be cool, and instead end up looking foolish.
So, during the playing of the aforementioned hit the lead singer decides that he'd like to get offstage and jump into the crowd with his microphone. The crowd is confined to the grandstand, and he can't seem to get access to the crowd due to the security. He decides to make an end-run, dashing along the front of the grandstands, chased by police and pumping his fist. His zig-zag run is backed by the band, which is repeating the basic tune of the song endlessly and wondering when the singer will come back.
The singer continues to try to get into the crowd, and is chased several hundred metres away from stage and the crowd (near to third base) by security. FINALLY he manages to convince security to let him into the grandstands. He climbs up through the seats, singing occasionally, and gets progressively more mauled by fans as he rises up towards me. He gets about ten rows away from me and some goth girl grabs his hat and runs off with it. This seems to take the fight out of our musical hero and, deflated and hatless, he slinks back down to the stage where the band thankfully gets to finish their set.
A bit sad really.
The Bunnymen are really good. Tight, pounding washes of guitar, Ian sounds great! It's a great set, the crowd is highly up for it and roars its approval.
New Order, the headliner and one of my favourite bands, is another early lesson in concertgoing: You don't have to be on stage for your music to keep playing.
Now, I love New Order. It has to be one of the most influential 80's bands ever AND their stuff is great to dance to. BUT, their live show sucks. The band is VERY still during the 'performance'. DEAD still. Okay, Peter Hook jumps around a bit, but it is NOT enough. Disappointed, I sit back and try to enjoy the music. It's great. The sound surges and rolls out, pumping the crowd up and down with the powerful beats. I close my eyes for a while and drink it in. When I open my eyes, the band is GONE! Oh yes, and the music is still going as before. The entire band left the stage DURING a song (Perfect Kiss? I can't remember)!! This is the first and ONLY time I've ever seen this. A Milli Vanilli moment if I've ever had one.
So, my first concert is a doozy, and filled with memorable events. It starts me on a long and ear-punishing road that follows below.

Tim Finn
Click here for a look at the ticket! A show that, for me, underlined the advantages of living in a big city. Sitting on Dundas east at the Library Pub with my hipster friends, somebody pipes up that Tim Finn, of Spilt Enz fame, is playing in an hour at the Horseshoe! We all decide that we will immediately leave the pub, walk two blocks to Queen, catch the 24 hour streetcar over to Spadina and see Tim Finn. It's that easy. Tim Finn comes to your town, you go see him. There were some really good things about living in Toronto.
Anyway, it was a great show, a semi-cabaret with Tim in full-on strange mode, part troubadour/part pop genius. Great tunes with suitably wonky arrangements, Tim is as good a songwriter as his brother Neil, but he seems to refuse to cut out the weirder ideas he gets, thus sabotaging the pure-pop structure his songs could have. It's still great stuff, and a fine time was had by all under the watchful gaze of Ann-Margret (if you don't get that reference, you've never been to the Horseshoe).

Lhasa
For those of you unaware of Lhasa's music, I strongly recommend that you go out and listen to some. A strange hybrid of Tom Waits and Edith Piaf, Lhasa's music is darkly beautiful, often heart-wrenching, and always captivating. Her cabaret blew into Guelph this evening and blew away the audience with a program of songs collected from her two albums and from her travels/life in Europe. An excellent backing band (with the sexiest cellist I have EVER seen) drove the mood of the evening, allowing the shy Lhasa De Sel to use her incredibly hoarse yet expressive voice to its fullest (whether it be in English, Spanish, French OR Portuguese). Relaxing and invigorating, this music will take hold of you. Listen!!

Stars
Free show for the youngsters at the University of Guelph. They were quite late (and apologetic), so didn't get a good soundcheck in, which showed. I spoke with the lead singer, and bought a CD and t-shirt for accidentally low prices (he had no idea how much they were worth). Very good band, and looking forward to seeing them again soon!!

Queens of the Stone Age / Throw Rag
For someone who's seen QOTSA three times now (all by myself!), I'm not really a huge fan of the band. I mean, I like them, and all, they are a good quality rock band, with flashes of real brilliance, but I could take them or leave them. Up to this point, I've mostly been going to see these shows for the whole package, as QOTSA usually pairs up with fantastic openers (Trail of Dead, Distillers, etc.)! This show was to be opened by the Eagles of Death Metal, one of my fave bands of the last year and a side-project of Josh Homme. Sadly, a few weeks ago, they dropped off tour. Shattered, I wished I had never bought my ticket. But, I went anyway.
And really, it was good. They've got a new album out, which is uniformly competent, with a couple of good tunes spiking through the fuzz. They are also minus long-time member Nick Oliveri, the grinning semi-nude bad-boy bassist type that a crowd always loves to see. The show starts off with some new stuff, and quickly runs back to the fan fave 'Feelgood Hit of the Summer/Fine art of Keeping a Secret' pairing. The band is a little jumpy here, and doesn't quite gell. Things pick up with the excellent new songs Medication and Little Sister, after which Mark Lanegan creeps up to the mic for a long middle set of darkly beautiful versions of old and new tunes. The addition of Lanegan's growl to Homme's croon seems to spark something in the band, and this is a great 5 or 6 song stretch. The last part of the show loses some momentum during some noodly rockistry, but the crowd is still very appreciative. While there is not so much dancing, and a little ripple of worry as large security guards (snapping their own souvenir cell-phone pics of the band) cruise through the crowd checking for 'wacky' cigarettes, the audience is pretty pumped up and know the new album cold. One encore brings three songs, No One Knows among them. Applause, praise to Toronto from Homme, lights on.
Overall, worthwhile, even without a great opener. The band is nice and smooth, and musically does not miss Oliveri's bass work. I think they do miss a little of Oliveri's show-off goofiness, as none of the remaining members of the band (save maybe the drummer) are particularly charismatic or very jumpy-aroundy. But, they DO really sound great.

Thursday, March 31, 2005 - Lee's Palace, Toronto, Ontario
Psychedelic Furs / The Novaks
Novaks, from Newfoundland, Furs, from ancient times. Both good.
It's always a crap shoot when you go and see a band that is a long time past their popular height. A looooong time past. Will they be a pathetic and dried up shell of a band, or will they be vital and strong, belting out the greats as if the intervening years had been spent encased in ice? I've seen both ends of this scale, so was interested to see where The Psychedelic Furs lay in relation to my previous experiences. Luckily, it turns out that the Furs are in pretty good shape. Excellent playing, and a surprisingly muscular sound, brought a basketful of classics to life under the direction of the wonderfully theatrical Richard Butler, a man as thin as is humanly possible. Incredibly flexible, and full of energy, Butler and his band fed off the warmth of a very excited crowd to belt out great song after great song. One good encore, with Pretty in Pink rendered well. Earlier, a fabulous version of Sister Europe was likely my highlight.
Had a nice Shish-taouk sandwich afterwards. Mmmm. Tahini.
