Something to fill out the Column
John Gerrath
and the
Mysteries of Science!!

So what is science?
Well, I've always figured that it's all about asking questions about things
and then trying to answer them.
Of course, there's the whole scientific method too.
I myself am an apprentice scientist who, until recently,
was working for the Cliff Ecology Research Group
at the University of Guelph's Botany Department.
Click on the previous links to visit those pages!
I did all sorts of work there, mostly as a field taxonomist,
looking at everything from cryptoendolithic algae to the restoration of National Parks!
I'm currently finishing my Master's Degree studying the Ontario populations
of American Chestnut (Castanea dentata).
It's been very interesting work, and rewarding research!

AND, I've just co-authored a new book with my old Cliff colleagues!
It's called the Urban Cliff Revolution, and you can check out
some media reports about the book here at the CBC's Quirks and Quarks, and the Discovery Channel's Daily Planet.
You can also (hint, hint) buy it via Amazon and Chapters.

One of my most memorable scientific experiences was a tour of duty in 1996 with
the Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology.
I paid for the privilege of two weeks in the Alberta Badlands,
digging up 75 million year old bones.
It was completely worth it.

I also managed to trudge up Mount Wapta in
Yoho National Park (Pretty much my favourite National Park)
to see the legendary Burgess Shale fossil beds on Mount Field.
Again, worth every second of the trip, even without the fabulous fossils.
