I have two separate Rennie lines that merge in Glasgow in 1867.
They are seemingly unrelated.
One looks to be deeply rooted in the Glasgow area and the other is from County Down in Ireland.

Descendants of William Rennie and Isabella Thomson
There is actually the potential for one more generation back in this line. John Rennie and Isobel Williamson of Barony, Lanarkshire, look to be very good candidates for the parents of William Rennie. There is no proof yet, but the name Williamson crops up in the report below.

Descendants of John Rennie and Jane Douglas
This line seems to come from Ireland, but most events take place in Scotland. The family emigrated to Wigtownshire in the 1820s and stayed until the 1850s when Thomas and Jane took the children to Glasgow to work in the shipyards. The Rennie sons all began studies as engineers but the family was cut down by Tuberculosis, which killed Thomas and his sons William, Thomas and James. The remaining son, John, became an naval engineer of some note, designing the sail plan for the famous Cutty Sark tea clipper (the fastest ship of its time) and taking a position as supervisor of ship-building at the Kiangnan Arsenal near Shanghai.
