| Sahara Explorer Day 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The following morning after a early start (04:30) we set of across the Salt Flats of Chott El-Jerid which were 6000 sq miles. It took us 2 hours to cross at the narrowest point. We stopped half way across to take a look at the sunrise and take a few photos. The Chott El-Jerid was actually used as the setting for Tatouine Anakins home planet in Star Wars. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We visited a Oasis in the Sahara at Hammet El Jerid where we looked at a Date plantation. Watched how a local at 71 years old climbed a palm tree barefoot in a matter of seconds and proceeded to do arial acrobatics up the tree. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We then went by 4x4 truck to an oasis at the foot of the Atlas mountains called Chebika to see where the film the "English patient" was filmed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Chebika was totally destroyed by floods in the 1980's and was rebuilt further down the road. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Algeria 12 km in the distance. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Our trip ended after we visited the Grand Mosque at Kairouan and had a brief walk round it's walls. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
