A Journal By Fredrick Henry Duerschner

We remember being chilled with horror when we read about it.

They spared no effort to control.

To preach Christ was their one vocation which, like Aaron's rod, swallowed up all other rods.

[Numbers 17:6-8]

To vow obedience.

{German writing}

My gratitude is more than I can put in words.

It will cause every loyal American to boil with indignation.

Betrayed by hireling shepherds.

Page 27

They came from sister-congregations with letters of transfer.

It pales into insignificance.

To many the Christmas-message, "Peace on earth" sounds like grim mockery.

If we would understand all the Bible says this would prove it to be man's word only, but God's word we do not always understand.

They try to attune the public mind to the new song.

The exceptions to this rule merely serve to accentuate the rule.

"And a new song is in my mouth, To long loved music set, Glory to thee for all the grace I have not tasted yet."

Page 28

His own self-contained glory.

It was eagerly adopted and hungrily swallowed by many in high places and low places.

The Lutheran church preaches the gospel of Christ crucified for the sins of a lost world.

They call themselves Calvinist in contradistinction to the Lutherans.

All that is merely human must fall into the cold grasp of death, and smolder in the dark, silent tomb.

We walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Cor 5,7.

If death not yet appear what we shall be. 1 Joh. 3,2.

The grave is the limit of Satan's activity; but there it is where divine activity begins. This is a glorious truth. Satan has the power of death; [Hebrews 2:14] but God is the God of the living [Mark 12:27]; and He give life beyond the reach and power of death, - a life which…

Page 30

… Satan cannot touch.

The Devil can destroy. There his power ends.

O death, where is thy sting?

O grave, where is thy victory?

Human expediency would have conducted Moses along quite an opposite path. It would have led him to use his influence on behalf of the people of God - to act for them - instead of suffering with them.

The church has an inclined floor.

We place the very existence of our parochial school system into gravest jeopardy if we insist on instructing in German only.

He misreads us badly who regards the situation created by the war as the only reason or even the main reason, why we approve of the Texas District resolution, which advises that preference be given to English as the language of religious instruction.

They suffered the same fate.

It is but sham and hypocrisy.

As the twig is bent, the tree is inclined.

It necessitates a nurture which is specifically Christian. This we have in our Christian day-schools.

There are few weapons of Satan so potent as flattery.

The honeyed lips of flattery. The Siren-song of flattery lulls us into sleep.

We have all reason to fear the demoralizing influence of flattery.

How can we cede homage to other masters?

We do not receive such information with easy credence.

The Lutheran Church can bear comparison with any church.

They are unacquainted with the simplest facts of Reformation history.

Quite to the contrary.

Gross misinterpretation.

History however gives ample proof.

This interpretation is untenable.

Luther at Worms before the Diet declared: "Unless convinced by Scriptural testimonies or by clear reason" Some are of the…

Page 46

… opinion Luther recognized two sources of religious knowledge, - Scripture and human reason. This statement however meant: "Unless convinced by Scripture testimonies or by logically correct deduction from these testimonies, he cannot retract. The phrase: "scripture et ratione" involves the twofold problem of proving a thing scriptural as to contents and logical as to form.

[2 Corinthians 11:4] [Galatians 1:8] [2 John 1:10]

Accordingly Luther demanded proofs that would show him teaching to be either contrary to Scripture or contrary to logic. He never thought of making reason a second source of religious knowledge in addition to Revelation.

[Mark 7:7-8]

Luther's attitude toward Scripture previous to the year 1521 does not admit of another interpretation.

Page 47

God's Word is the sword we must wield in order to ward off all enemies. [Ephesians 6:17]

That which is contained in Scripture or derived by necessary and plain deduction from its contents a Christian need not believe.

A statement in canonical Scripture is more authoritative than an assertion of the Christian church.

Articles of faith must be verified by Scriptures.

The teaching of the church must fully coincide with the Bible. [Mark 7:8]

Rather stand with Scripture.

Page 48

Against the church, than with the church against the Scripture.

To this decision Luther came.

Luther always clearly and forcefully exposed opposition to human authority, or to man's own reason and proclaimed the sole authority of the Scriptures.

The Romans are accustomed to accommodate the words of the Bible to the words of the church fathers.

At Worms Luther did not introduce human reason as a second source of religious knowledge.

Blessed are the wedded pair who as they walk together can say: "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." [Psalm 119:105]

Because God's Word is spoken the church comes into being.

The church does not make the Word, she is created by the Word. [John 1:1-3]
