A Journal By Fredrick Henry Duerschner

Page 126

Some persist in cherishing the delusive hope of a world converted by the gospel.

At the end of this age, instead of a converted world, there will be a vine covered and borne down with terrible clusters, fully ripe for the wine-press of the wrath of almighty God.

[Revelation 14:19, 19:15]

Fling to the winds your fondly cherished delusion, and accept instead the plainly revealed and clearly established truth of God!

The lambs and sheep of Christ's blood-bought flock.

There is very great danger of pushing the do-nothing and give-nothing principle too far.

We must humble ourselves on account of our manifold failures, shortcomings,…

Page 127

… and inconsistencies and to seek grace from Him in this dark and evil day.

Even-handed justice of God.

The human heart is the seed-plot of every sin, and of every vile and abominable and contemptible wickedness that ever was committed in this world.

Human nature is capable of doing things that put us morally below the level of a beast.

It would be well for many a one who walks in pharisaic pride and self-complacency, puffed up with false notions of his own dignity and high-toned morality, to learn this deeply humbling lesson.

This oppressed and groaning earth.

Page 128

In speaking of the altar in the New Testament the word to express a heathen altar is not used, but a new word is employed.

bwmo\n = heathen altar

qusiasth/rion = altar of God

Is there not in our private and public worship a deplorable lack of heart, of real devotedness, deep-toned earnestness and holy earnestness? Is there not a deplorable amount of cold formality and dead routine in our seasons of worship, both in the closet and in the assembly?

It is not merely our best, but our all we owe to that blessed One who gave Himself for us.

May the heart, the head, the hands, the feet, the whole man be dedicated, in unreserved devotedness, to Him. [Romans 12:1]

Sin-hating God.

Page 129

We are prone to rush to hasty conclusions, to give place to baseless surmisings, and allow our minds to be warped and carried away by prejudice.

We might inflict a grievous wrong upon a friend, a brother, or a neighbor by giving utterance to a fake impression or a baseless charge.

God will let us sink, but not sink under.

Pleasure-hunting and self-indulgence.

They will sooner or later find out their woeful mistake.

The unwitting man-slayer was met by the provision of mercy; the guilty murderer fell beneath the stern sentence of inflexible justice.

We in our fancied wisdom.

Page 130

A God-hating, Christ-rejecting world.

Our day of soft, self-indulgent, easy-going profession.

Our faith must not be a head-belief founded on miracles, but a heart belief in the Son of God.

A careful comparison of the two chapters will enable the reader to see their entire distinctness.

These are reasonable words for this day of easy-going, self-indulgent, worldly profession. May they sink down into our ears and hearts.

good-for-nothing self pleasure

law-works - life-works

May these words ring in the ears and sink down into the hearts of men.

Page 131

Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.

[2 Timothy 3:4]

Thousands are rushing blindly, headlessly, and madly down the inclined plane that leads to hopeless and everlasting misery.

Let us seriously ponder these things in the divine presence.

God speaks in powerful sign-language.

The soul-harrowing, heart-rendering cry "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"

[Psalm 22:1]

[Matthew 27:46]

[Mark 15:34]

Many hands were raised to wound Him,

None would interpose to save;

But the deepest stroke that pierced Him

Was the stroke Justice gave.

A well-intentioned cruelty you might call it.

God's heart is immutable the same.

They dance on the mountains of folly and revel in their sins, unconscious of danger.

God's breast heaves with love for the sinner.

Man is light-hearted, giddy, gay.

Our case is not hopeless it is hopeful.

A vision flits before my eyes, I think I see the blessed Jesus in shepherd's garb, with staff in hand, bearing on His shoulders a lost sheep, whom He has recovered. Happy soul, thou art laid on the everlasting shoulders, guarded by omnipotent power, and kept secure from harm.

Some of us have seen heart-broken mothers agonizing in prayer over a child at the point of death.

There is no such a thing as a Christ-less gospel.

Jesus our great Sin-Bearer, has borne away our sins that they may never again be remembered against us. [1 Peter 2:24]

His all-atoning blood.

We pray for the rich assistance of the divine Spirit.

I have seen the tears guttering their cheeks, I have seen their whole soul moved within them.

When you have been sick, sigh unto death.

Constrained by His infinite love.

They are pursuing a folly so enormous and so ruinous to themselves and others that there are scarcely words in the language to express the sadness of it.

Let the church preach these heaven-born truths.

The eagle-eyed argus-eyed world observes everything we do, and sharp critics are upon us.

So many only seek pre-eminence in the church.

Precious soul-sustaining, God-honoring faith!

It will enable us to grapple with the difficulties, hindrances and horrible influences which surround us.

tranquilizing assurance

The melancholy story of man's ways.

He is the Rock - not merely a rock. There is, there can be, no other Rock but Himself. Eternal and universal homage to His glorious name.

Privileged subjects of God's grace.

We must carry ourselves to be well-pleasing to Him.

Page 139

God's enemies will meet His unsparing wrath.

The world and the so-called church are rushing on together, with appalling rapidity, along the dark pathway of self-will, a pathway which must end in the blackness of darkness forever. Let us earnestly seek to tread the narrow path.

Let us not be moved the breadth of a hair from the path indicated by the word of God.

Self-willed rejection of God's authority.

A truth to be tenaciously grasped and faithfully confessed.

This would be impossible on various grounds.

True it is - blessedly true.

A grand mistake.

Let us deeply ponder this.

Page 140

Man's complete ruin in sin, and God's perfect remedy in Christ are strikingly presented.

Between God and Christ alone the entire question of sin was gone into, and finally settled on the cross.

As Abraham and Isaac were alone on the top of the mountain in the Land of Mariah [Genesis 22:1-14], so were God and Christ alone, amidst the solemnities and solitude's of Calvary. The only part we had in the cross was, that our sins were there. Jesus alone bore the full weight of their judgements.

Rude ignorance or blind credulity.

The Dayspring from on high.

{German Word}.

The moon, being in herself opaque, derives all her light from the sun.

Page 141

The moon has her light from the sun.

As the sun is a beautiful and an appropriate symbol of Christ, so the moon strikingly reminds us of the church. The fountain of her light is hidden from view. The world seeth Him not, but she sees Him; and she is responsible to reflect His beams upon a benighted world.

How should she reflect this light? By allowing it to shine upon her in its undimmed brightness.

The light of the moon is not her own. So it is with the church.

A cursed and blood-stained earth.

The Lord said: "Thou shall surely die." [Genesis 2:17] The serpent said: "Ye shall not surely die." [Genesis 3:4] Allow the voice of the Lord to prevail above the hiss of the serpent.

The infidel calls our obedience to the word of God: "blind obedience," …

Page 142

… but the Christian calls it: "intelligent obedience," inasmuch as it is based upon the knowledge that it is God's word to which he is obedient.

From an unbiased standpoint.

He is making his reckoning without his host.

We have no love for England. We have no reason to trust the devil, even when the devil is sick.

We shall not fetch France's chestnuts out of the fire.

We do not follow a comrade blindfolded through thick and thin.

The foul well of anti-Germanic hatred.

We must not permit our cause to be weakened by envy and petty spite. A house divided against itself cannot stand.

Page 143

Unvarnished truth.

The qualities of Washington should become the lodestars for the youth or our country.

smug hypocrisy

Self-satisfied.

A deeply-important point.

They became degraded, powerless, Satan-enslaved, conscience-smitten, terrified creatures.

God called Adam and said unto him, "Where art thou?" [Genesis 3:9] This question proved two things. It proved that man was lost, and that God had come to seek. It proved man's sin, and God's grace. Why is the sinner valuable to God? This eternity will unfold.

Starting-post.

Page 144 "Speak softly but carry a Big Stick" Roosevelt

Fallen man is a self-vindicating, and, therefore, God-accusing sinner.

To know that the dress I wear, and in which I appear before God is His own providing, must set my heart at perfect rest.

Faith is a living link, connecting the heart that possesses it with God who gives it. Human feelings, however intense, - human sentiment however refined, - could not connect the soul with God. They are like Jonah's gourd, which sprang up in a night, and perished in a night. Not so faith. That precious principle partakes of all the value, all the power, and all the reality of the source from whence it emanates, and the object with which it has to do. It justifies the soul; - Rom. 5,1.- it purifies the heart; - Acts 15,9 - it works by love; - …

Page 145

… Gal 5,6 - it overcomes the world. 1 John 5,4. Feeling and sentiment never could accomplish such results; they belong to nature and to earth, - faith belongs to God and to heaven they are occupied with self; - faith is occupied with Christ; they look inward and downward, - faith looks outward and upward; they leave the soul in darkness and doubt, faith leads it into light and peace; they have to do with one's fluctuating condition, - faith has to do with God's immutable truth, and Christ's eternally-enduring sacrifice.

Every imagination of the thoughts of man's heart was only evil continually. [Genesis 6:5]

All flesh had become irrecoverably bad before the flood.

The word of God brings His light to shine upon all that by which man's…

Page 146

… heart is deceived. It removes completely, the gilding with which the serpent covers a vain, deceitful, passing world, over which hangs the sword of divine judgement.

One is left to wander amid the bewildering mazes of human tradition.

How could Noah without the word have withstood the scoffs and sneers of an infidel world? The word was the immovable ground he occupied.

Satan's imagery and man's imagination.

To great is their license in word and deed that through continual contact with them their modesty and piety disappear like wax before the fire.

I believe to serve I must rise above selfishness and petty jealousy.

Page 147

Life in Love.

The fruit of the Spirit in terms of love:

[Galatians 5:22-23]

Joy is love exulting.

Peace is love reposing.

Longsuffering is love untiring.

Gentleness is love enduring.

Goodness is love in action.

Faith is love on the battlefield.

Meekness is love under discipline.

Temperance is love in training.

In flat defiance of.

Death to the saints is but a gateway, beyond which lie the brilliant fields of Paradise, with the glorious and many-mansioned abode of the Father, in the beautiful City on high, where the Lamb is the light.

Civilization prevails; but civilization is not righteousness.

Page 148

Christ emptied the scene of death, and filled it with life, and therefore, it is not death, but glory that lies before the believer. Death is behind Him, and behind Him forever. [Hebrews 10:10] As to the future, it is all glory, - cloudless glory.

Noah floated in peace on that very water by which "all flesh" was judged. The family of Noah were as safe as God could make them. There was no power, in angelic, human or diabolical, which could possibly burst open the door of the ark, and let the waters in. Just so now, who can touch those who have by faith, retreated into the shadow of the cross? Every enemy has been met and silenced, - yes silenced for ever.

Heirs and expectants of coming glory.

A very seasonable lesson.

Christ's divinely full salvation.

Page 149

The long-suffering of God, and the testimony of His servant, had both been slighted. Present things had engrossed the people of that day.

The sweeping and garnishing are going forward; but it is not in order to fit the house for Christ, but for Antichrist.

Unmingled grace declared! - unmingled wrath impending! How solemn! How deeply solemn!

Faith can see the clouds gathering thickly around the world's horizon. Judgement is coming.

Man's pitiable self-complacency.

Beneath the feet of God's enemies is a hollow foundation.

On the highway to the grossest forms of idolatry.

Page 150

Ordinances are added to Christ, and the work of Christ. [Galatians 5:6] [Colossians 2:14, 2:20-23] They say, the sinner is not saved by Christ alone, but by Christ and ordinances Thus he is robbed of Christ altogether; for it will assuredly be found that Christ and ordinances will prove, in the sequel, to be ordinances, and not Christ. We must not set aside Christ and deify the ordinances.

The hardest thing is to write a recommendation for someone you know.

The angry billows, which had lashed and frothed and rolled over Jesus in their fury, subsided; and lo, there was a great calm.

A veil of impenetrable mystery hides death from our sight and we can not pry into it.

The wished-for end.
