Dear Sister, (1)
Your letter came today. I wish I could give you some information , but I can't.
I only know the names, N.C. was their native state - they refugeed to GA.
IVEYs I mean. You will hear from Clara (3), - I have been told that three
brothers Sumerfords came from England - one died and our grandfather Andrew Jackson
S__ raised his one son. The other brother Bill Sumerford & Grandpa settled
in GA -. I married young and was never with the S__ family much after that.
Except Ida (4) - I have never known either family of that neice (Cannot
make out) it in phone book in (cannot make out) cities, I would so love to
know more of (Cannot make out). Tell Allen (5) his Auntie is so very proud of
his stripes, & how I do wish I could see him. Dr. Jeter (6) says tell
you, of course you liked Texas better than LA _ anybody would - know there, was
not comparison of course Texas is home to him, & he does not like LA - it
so damp - here - so few sunny days - pretty cold here today - Dr. Jeter - liked
Galveston in his visits there. North Texas was home at least near Dallas.
(back of page) Long letter from (?) & Mae (7) last week they often ask
about you both. Wish I had saved Mae's letter, it was just like Mae - News
Hoyts (8) is married, married another nurse on 18 Dec - just told about it
last week - she was there on a visit - after they married she went back to Chicago
to finish a contract she had there - she is an Atlanta girl - they all know her
- but made "nary a single remark" - wonder how that will effect their
home life - the house belongs to Hoyt. Mae has spent a lot of her money on decorating
& (cannot make out) of there thought Hoyt would (Cannot make out) again,
when I was feeling fine there in June, (cannot make out) about it - Clara
said a burnt child a (cannot make out) the fire - Hoyt is so peculiar, &
grows more so, - Mae says pity the woman if he does. IVEY & Charles are
both in Service. Charles & wife are Cal (Col?) - Dr. Jeter has son stationed
in Denver, Col - doing television photography - one son with F. B. I. Two of
his boys were in World War - too old, also had grand son in air service - got
his wings Xmas & then got him a wife - one of his daughter sent me a Xmas
present & addressed the Xmas card to Dr. & Mrs. E. D. Jeter - 1st time.
I have been recognized - by any except his preacher son Dan We are excepting
him very soon to us.
Love, write soon, Sister (9)
(Letter above on one sheet front & back- letter below is believed be of
same date and added notes by same handwriting & same type of paper- front
& back . The middle page mishap is not as bad.)
A. J. Sumerford. Grandpa -
Carolyn Wilkes grandmother
English. (Sumerford)
D. L. Ivey Father
Carolyn Brown Sumerford Mother
Ida - can tell you more of Sumerfords
Mother died when I was too young to care -
How did you - at least where did you get your book - Would like to have oneone
of the /Sumerfords - I know so little of them.
I wrote Clara today to send direct to you, the IVEY history that she has -
I remember my Grandfather Sumerford very distinctly, as a very high loved proud
reserved polished gentleman, I never saw him turn his hand, to do anything not
ever to draw a bucket of water, he was always immaculately dressed - very good
willed - He had land & slaves - his old slaves (? Cannot make out) Lucd (same
turn) still Lucd on the plantation where I visited so much.
(Back of page) They succeeded to idolize him - Aunt Gracie came with my mother
she married, not as a slave of course - but as she was one of Grandpas' - former
slaves - You remember them, how faithful they were on down to peace'ull - not
writing this for history - just memories that came of childhood. Grace (?epa)
gave each child as they married 100 acres of land - don't know any of them had
any slave facility - The Buckles family was one of the his slave facilities,
also they lived on the farm of brother & daddys' - Brantley (10) remembers.
All of this has nothing to do with what you want - however - I hope you get from
Clara - more of it. Don't even know where my grandfather S____ came from. He
had one brother whom I know - he was the same type of man large plantation Negroes
on it when I visited (not slaves of course) but once were lovely large two story
colonial house - seemed to have more than my grandfather.(12)
