Thomas Graves 1645 Settler of Hartford, Connecticut and Hatfield, Massachusetts
and His Descendants, By Kenneth Vance Graves, Family History Publication, Warentham,
MA,
1985. (page 98)
Stephen Graves (499) was born 22 May 1763 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Mass.,
and died
2 March 1828 at his home on Island Creek, about 2 miles south of Vonore, Monroe
Co.,
Tennessee. He may have been born in 1759, as indicated by his pension application,
and the
1763 date may be when he was baptized. He married Jennie (or Jenny) ------ about
1783-4. She was born about 1760, probably in Blount Co., Tennessee., and died
after 1820
in Blount Co. or Monroe Co., Tennessee. Stephen enlisted in Massachusetts in
1776 or the
spring of 1777 for a term of 5 years. He served as a drummer in Captain. Lillie's
and Capt.
Harris's Co., County. Knox Regt. of Artillery, in the American Revolution. He
was in the
battles of Skinesborough, Stillwater, and Saratoga, and present at the surrender
of
Burgoyne after Gen. Wayne took Stone Point in 1779. He marched to that place
and was
taken prisoner by the British, and taken on a sloop to Charleston, South Carolina,
where he was kept
prisoner until the end of the Revolution. He never returned to Massachusetts.
(Another
version is that in 1780, with two friends, he went on furlough to Boston, was
captured by
the British and taken on the Sloop of War Vulture to the harbor of Charleston,
South Carolina, where
he was recaptured by an American privateer. After the ship made a tour, he was
released
in Charleston about 1783-84. Meanwhile, he was listed as a deserter from the
Army in
Mass. in 1780.) Stephen paid poll tax and owned 50 acres of land in 1800 in
Blount Co.,
Tennessee. With sons William and Adam he served as a drum major in the War of
1812. He
was allowed a pension on his application executed July 1, 1818, at which time
he was 59
years old and residing in Blount Co., Tennessee. "State of Tennessee.,
Co. of Blount, Sept. 25,
1820, appeared Stephen Graves, age 61, a resident of said county, that he served
in the
Revolution, has no income from other than that which is in the schedule contained
hereto
annexed. 1 mare 2 years old, 1 calf 1 year old, 1 sow, 3 pigs, 1 note for $40.00
John
Black insolvent (?), 1 note for $50 on John V. Hynes a desperate debt. I owe
$60 and $65
in all. I am a farmer by occupation, but I have no land to cultivate and if
I did my age and
infirmity is so great that I could not support myself. My family consists of
myself and my
wife Jenny, age about 60. I believe she is as stout (?) as perhaps any at her
age could be
who has a family and is in moderate circumstances. Stephen Graves." Stephen
sold his
land to Adam, his son, and was living with him in 1820. All his children were
probably
born in Blount Co., Tennessee. (R-17, R-21)
